The Arrakis Revolt, also known as the Arrakis Affair, is the central upheaval of Frank Herbert's Dune, a conflict that transforms the desert planet Arrakis from a neglected fief into the fulcrum of the universe. It is the story of how the Fremen, a people long oppressed by the Harkonnens and ignored by the Imperium, rise under the leadership of Paul-Muad'Dib to defeat both their planetary oppressors and the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, ultimately placing Paul on the Golden Lion Throne. The revolt is not merely a military campaign but a convergence of ecological dreams, religious prophecy, political machination, and personal vengeance, with consequences that ripple across the entire Imperium and beyond.

Causes and Background

The seeds of the revolt lie in the decades of Harkonnen misrule and the Imperial conspiracy that brought House Atreides to Arrakis. For eighty years, the Harkonnens held Arrakis under a CHOAM contract, mining the spice melange with brutal efficiency. Their governor, Glossu Rabban, known as "Beast Rabban," squeezed the planet mercilessly, driving the population into poverty and the Fremen into the deep desert. The Fremen, descendants of the Zensunni Wanderers, had developed a culture of survival and a dream of terraforming Arrakis into a paradise, a vision instilled by the planetologist Pardot Kynes and continued by his son, Liet-Kynes. They paid the Spacing Guild a monstrous bribe in spice to keep the skies clear of satellites, hiding their ecological work and their growing strength. The Emperor, fearing the popularity and military prowess of Duke Leto Atreides, conspired with Baron Vladimir Harkonnen to destroy House Atreides, using the change of fief as a trap. The betrayal by Dr. Wellington Yueh, who was coerced by the Baron's capture of his wife, led to the Duke's capture and death, and forced Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica, to flee into the desert, where they were taken in by Stilgar's Fremen tribe.

Paul's acceptance among the Fremen marked the beginning of the revolt. He proved himself in the tahaddi challenge, killing Jamis, and was given the name Muad'Dib. His mother, Jessica, became a Reverend Mother by transforming the Water of Life, and Paul himself later survived the same ordeal, becoming the Kwisatz Haderach. The decisive engagement of the revolt occurred when the Emperor himself arrived on Arrakis with five legions of Sardaukar, accompanied by the Baron and his forces. Paul, having learned of the Emperor's presence through his prescience, planned a massive attack. Using atomics to breach the Shield Wall, he unleashed a coriolis storm that shorted out the enemy's shields, rendering them vulnerable. The Fremen, riding sandworms and armed with rockets, overwhelmed the Sardaukar and Harkonnen troops. During the chaos, Alia, Paul's sister, killed Baron Harkonnen with a gom jabbar, avenging their father. The Emperor was forced to retreat into his ship, and Paul, after a duel with Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, emerged victorious. The Emperor, with his forces defeated and the Guild threatening to strand him, was compelled to surrender.

Consequences and Aftermath

The revolt's outcome reshaped the Imperium. Paul forced the Emperor to abdicate, taking Princess Irulan as his wife to legitimize his claim to the throne, while Chani remained his beloved concubine. The Emperor was exiled to Salusa Secundus, and the CHOAM Company's holdings were transferred to Paul as dowry. Gurney Halleck was granted the fief of Caladan, and Stilgar was appointed Governor of Arrakis. The Fremen, now the dominant power, began the terraforming project that would eventually make Arrakis a green world, though the spice would remain.
