The Residency
The Residency is the former seat of government in Arrakeen, the capital city of Arrakis, and the central setting for the Atreides family's brief and tragic rule. It is a massive, ancient stone structure that once served as the government mansion in the days of the Old Empire, later becoming the Harkonnen stronghold before being handed over to Duke Leto Atreides. The building's history and architecture reflect the harsh realities of Arrakis, and it becomes the stage for key events: the arrival of the Atreides, the hunter-seeker attack on Paul, the discovery of the conservatory, the betrayal by Dr. Yueh, and ultimately the fall of House Atreides. After the Battle of Arrakeen, Paul-Muad'Dib reclaims the Residency as his seat of power, symbolizing his victory and the beginning of his reign.
Architecture and History
The Residency is a giant anachronism, a relic of the Old Empire, with buttressed walls, dark hangings, and an arched ceiling two stories high. The great crossbeams were shipped to Arrakis across space at monstrous cost, as no trees grow on the planet. It had been the government mansion in the days of the Old Empire, before the Harkonnens built their new megalopolis of Carthag, a cheap and brassy place some two hundred kilometers northeast across the Broken Land. Duke Leto chose this place for his seat of government because the name Arrakeen had a good sound, filled with tradition, and because it was a smaller city, easier to sterilize and defend. The building's cold, bleak stone reminded Lady Jessica of the Sisters' Hall at her Bene Gesserit school, but at the school the effect had been of warmth; here, all was bleak stone.
The Atreides Arrival
When the Atreides family first arrived, the Residency was piled with the packaged freight of their lives—boxes, trunks, cartons, cases—some partly unpacked. Jessica stood in the center of the great hall, feeling a pang of homesickness for Caladan. The Duke, in his black working uniform with the red armorial hawk crest, came to hang the key of Caladan Castle in the dining hall, a gesture of finality. He ordered the removal of the laving basins, a Harkonnen custom that wasted water, and replaced it with a more generous practice of giving a full cup of water to each beggar who called. The Residency also housed a hidden conservatory, a wet-planet garden with a fountain and exotic plants, a deliberate statement of power and wealth that shocked Jessica with its waste of water on a planet where water was the most precious juice of life.
The Hunter-Seeker Attack
In the Residency, Paul narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a hunter-seeker, a tiny metal sliver guided by a nearby operator, emerged from behind the carved headboard of his bed. Paul's quick reflexes and training saved him, and he smashed the device against the doorplate. The Shadout Mapes, the Fremen housekeeper, witnessed the attack and warned Paul of a traitor in their midst. The attack was later traced to a Harkonnen agent hidden in a cairn in the cellar, who died before he could be interrogated. This event heightened the sense of danger and paranoia within the Residency, leading to increased security and suspicion.
The Conservatory and the Message
Jessica discovered the conservatory, a room filled with exotic wet-climate plants, including roses, and a small fountain. There she found a note from Lady Margot Fenring, the previous occupant, which contained a hidden message in Bene Gesserit code: "Your son and Duke are in immediate danger. A bedroom has been designed to attract your son. The H loaded it with death traps to be discovered, leaving one that may escape detection." The message also warned of a traitor among the Duke's trusted companions. This discovery deepened the sense of impending doom and set the stage for the betrayal.
The Betrayal and Fall
It was in the Residency that Dr. Yueh, the Suk doctor with Imperial Conditioning, betrayed Duke Leto. Using a dart with a selective drug, Yueh paralyzed the Duke and replaced his tooth with a poison capsule, intending for Leto to kill the Baron Harkonnen in a final act of revenge. The Residency became the scene of the Harkonnen attack, with the house shields dropped and the Atreides forces overwhelmed. The Duke was captured and taken to the Baron's command post, where he died after biting the poison tooth, killing Piter de Vries and nearly killing the Baron. The Residency was looted and left in ruins, symbolizing the fall of House Atreides.
Paul's Return and Symbolic Victory
After the Battle of Arrakeen, Paul-Muad'Dib chose the Residency as his command post, despite its history and the danger it represented. He strode through the main entrance with Gurney Halleck and Stilgar a pace behind, and the building was cleared of Harkonnen remnants. Paul occupied the Residency to seal his victory, stating, "This place is a symbol. Rabban lived here. By occupying this place I seal my victory for all to understand." The Residency thus became the seat of the new Duke of Arrakis, a testament to the Atreides' return and the beginning of Paul's reign as Emperor.
