Cistern stampede
The Cistern stampede is the catastrophic moment when the World Health Organization's attempt to contain Bertrand Zobrist's biological threat collapses into public chaos, transforming a controlled operation into a panicked flight that allows Sienna Brooks to escape into the night. The event unfolds in the Yerebatan Sarayi, the ancient sunken palace beneath Istanbul, where a week-long concert series of Liszt's Dante Symphony has just concluded its final performance. The subterranean cavern, with its forest of 336 marble columns rising from a glassy sheet of dark water, is still crowded with several hundred spectators in tuxedos, gowns, bishts, burkas, and tourist attire when the crisis erupts.
Causes and Background
Agent Christoph Brüder has just discovered that the Solublon bag containing Zobrist's virus has already dissolved, its contents dispersed into the cistern's water and now airborne. He orders Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey to seal the doors, declaring, "The contagion has been dispersed!" Sinskey, standing at the base of the stairwell, sees the unsuspecting crowd confined in the underground space and reacts on instinct, raising her radio to give the order to seal the area. At that same moment, Sienna Brooks, who has been hiding in the cistern after wading into the lagoon to find and destroy the virus, bursts from concealment and begins sprinting toward the exit, knocking people aside as she runs. Langdon chases her through the crowd, and Sienna, seeing the exit ahead, shouts something in Turkish to the concertgoers on the boardwalk. The exact words are not given, but the effect is immediate: a ripple of panic sweeps through the crowd, and suddenly everyone is dashing for the stairs.
What Happens
Sinskey, seeing the stampede begin, turns her back to the oncoming surge and screams up the stairs to her team: "Lock the doors! Seal the cistern! NOW!" By the time Langdon skids around the corner into the stairwell, Sinskey is already halfway up the stairs, clambering toward the surface and shouting wildly to close the doors. Sienna Brooks is close on her heels, struggling with her heavy, wet burka as she lumbers upward. Langdon's long legs carry him three steps at a time, gaining fast on Sienna. Above, he can see the cistern's heavy double doors begin to swing inward, but they are moving too slowly. Sienna overtakes Sinskey, grabbing her shoulder and using it as leverage to launch past her, clambering wildly over her toward the exit. Sinskey stumbles forward onto her knees, her beloved lapis lazuli amulet hitting the cement stairs and breaking in half. Langdon hurtles past the fallen woman, sprinting toward the top landing. Sienna is only a few feet away now, almost within reach, but she has attained the landing, and the doors are not closing fast enough. Without breaking stride, Sienna angles her slender body and leaps sideways through the narrow opening. She is halfway through when her burka snags on a latch, halting her, wedged in the doorway. Langdon's hand shoots out and seizes a clump of her burka, pulling back, trying to reel her in, but she wriggles frantically and he is left holding only a wet clump of fabric. The doors slam onto the fabric, barely missing Langdon's hands. Through the narrow slit, he sees Sienna sprinting across a busy street, her bald head shining in the streetlights, wearing the same sweater and blue jeans she has worn all day. A sudden, crushing weight rams Langdon hard against the door as the stampede arrives behind him. The stairwell echoes with shouts of terror and confusion as the symphony orchestra's music deteriorates into a confused cacophony below. Langdon's rib cage compresses painfully against the door until the doors explode outward, launching him into the night like a cork from a bottle of champagne. Behind him, a stream of humanity flows up out of the earth like ants escaping from a poisoned anthill. The SRS agents, hearing the sounds of chaos, emerge from behind the building in full hazmat gear and respirators, immediately amplifying the panic.
Consequences and Aftermath
The containment plan has failed utterly. Brüder, standing alone in the waist-deep water in the deepest recesses of the cistern, realizes with horror that the doors were never sealed. The virus, which has already been dispersing for a week, is now carried by the fleeing crowd into the city. Sinskey, wearing a respirator and a hazmat suit, enters the desolate space with the SRS team, who look like astronauts breaching an alien spacecraft. She feels lucky to have escaped with only a bruised knee and a broken amulet. The doors upstairs are now locked, hermetically sealed, and guarded by local authorities, but it is too late. Brüder's PCR devices, set up along the boardwalks at increasing distances from the lagoon, begin blinking red one by one, all the way across the cistern to the entrance, revealing that the entire cistern is teeming with virus. The radius of contamination is enormous. Sinskey reflects that only one form of contagion travels faster than a virus, and that is fear. Langdon, having been launched into the street, sees the pale flash of Sienna's bald head darting along a crowded sidewalk and disappearing around a corner. Without hesitation, he sprints after her, beginning the chase that will lead through the Spice Bazaar and ultimately to the waterfront, where Sienna will steal a boat, then turn back and finally confess the truth about Zobrist's sterility plague.
