Bassey Park

Bassey Park is a Derry public park that becomes a crucial nexus for the supernatural events of the novel, serving as a boundary between the ordinary world of Harris Avenue and the hidden levels of reality where the Purpose and the Random contend. It is the site of Ralph Roberts and Lois Chasse's first direct confrontation with the rogue entity Atropos, and later, the place from which Ralph launches his final, fatal intervention to save Natalie Deepneau. The park's racetrack and its public toilets, the Portosans, are transformed from mundane amenities into portals, marking Bassey Park as a liminal space where the fabric of the Short-Time world is at its thinnest and most permeable.

Location and Description

Bassey Park is situated on the east side of Derry, adjacent to the Derry Civic Center. Its most prominent feature is a harness-racing track, which is used for pacers from May to September. The park also contains a grandstand, a playground, and a small midway area used during the County Fair. The park is bordered by the Civic Center's parking lot on one side and by Neibolt Street on another. A key feature of the park is the pair of Portosans, one marked MEN and the other WOMEN, which stand at the bottom of a hill near the racetrack. These toilets are later revealed to be more than they seem, serving as doorways to other levels of existence.

The First Confrontation with Atropos

Ralph and Lois first come to Bassey Park after following the trail of the entity Atropos from the Civic Center. The trail leads them across the park's racetrack, where Lois pauses to adjust her slip, and then down a brushy slope to Neibolt Street. The park is also the site of their first direct confrontation with Atropos, who emerges from the Portosan marked MEN. Atropos, wearing Bill McGovern's Panama hat and carrying a rusty scalpel, attempts to kill the stray dog Rosalie by cutting her balloon-string. Ralph and Lois, now able to perceive the auras of the world, intervene. Lois, acting on Ralph's instruction, shoots a bolt of blue-gray light from her finger, striking Atropos and driving him off. This event solidifies their understanding of the hidden war being waged and their role in it.

A Portal to the Higher Levels

Later, after the attack on High Ridge, Ralph and Lois return to Bassey Park. There, they meet Clotho and Lachesis, the two little bald doctors who serve the Purpose. In a clearing at the bottom of the park's sledding hill, Clotho performs a ritual on Ralph, cutting open his forearm with his scissors to create a scar that will serve as a visible sign of their pact. This act is witnessed by Lois from a park bench. The park is also the location where a mysterious "green man" appears to Lois, returning her diamond earrings and telling her to give them to Ralph. The Portosans themselves become literal portals: Ralph steps into the one marked MEN and is instantly transported into Ed Deepneau's airplane as it flies toward the Civic Center. The park thus becomes a staging ground for the final, desperate acts of the narrative.

The Final Sacrifice

In the novel's climax, Ralph Roberts, having returned from his confrontation with Ed Deepneau, walks through Bassey Park with Lois. They pause at the Portosans, where Ralph hears Ed singing inside. Ralph then uses Ed's wedding ring, which he had taken from Atropos's lair, to create a portal and step into the plane. After the plane crashes into the Civic Center, Ralph and Lois are thrown from the Portosan, landing in the park. The park is the last place Ralph is seen alive before he runs into the street to save Natalie Deepneau from a speeding car, a sacrifice that costs him his life. The park, therefore, is not only a site of supernatural revelation but also the final, earthly setting for Ralph's heroic act.
