Christmas in the novel is a brief but clearly dated interval at the Barnum family residence in Ellensburg. Its two recorded moments run from Christmas Eve, Tuesday, 24 December, into the early hours of Wednesday, 25 December. Rather than centering on a formal celebration, the scenes register the holiday through music, a shared household, and the attention Shelby and Jungkook pay to one another.

Calendar and Setting

The holiday sequence begins with a marker identifying Christmas Eve and locating the scene at the Barnum family residence in Ellensburg. The next scene is dated Tuesday, 24 December, at 7:01 p.m.; the following one takes place at 1:43 a.m. on Wednesday, 25 December. These timestamps give the passage a compact, continuous shape, carrying the reader from the evening before Christmas through midnight and into Christmas Day.

The dates also distinguish the holidayโ€™s two parts without treating them as separate episodes. The same home remains the setting throughout, while the clock advances from the evening gathering to a late-night exchange. Christmas is therefore presented as lived domestic time: a succession of shared moments rather than an account of a larger public celebration.

Christmas Eve

At 7:01 p.m., Wham!โ€™s Last Christmas plays in the living room. Jungkook is outside smoking when he turns and sees Shelby dancing and singing, with Loki beside her. He smiles, puts out his cigarette, and comes back into the house. After closing the glass doors behind him, he leans against the doorframe with his arms folded and keeps watching Shelby. She notices him when she turns and catches sight of him.

The small sequence pivots on that look. Jungkook moves from outside to inside, leaving the cigarette behind as he shifts his attention to the living room; Shelbyโ€™s turn makes his quiet observation a moment of mutual awareness. The scene does not describe an interruption or a conversation between them. Its emphasis remains on the contrast between Shelbyโ€™s dancing and singing and Jungkookโ€™s stillness at the threshold, watching her from the doorway.

After Midnight

At 1:43 a.m. on Christmas Day, the narrative returns to the Barnum family residence. Shelby laughs as she tells Jungkook that Namjoonโ€™s gift is hilarious, and Jungkook smiles in agreement. The brief exchange places them together after midnight and extends the holiday sequence beyond the song and dancing of the previous evening.

The two scenes offer different, modest signs of their shared time: first, Jungkook watching Shelby as she enjoys the music with Loki; later, Shelby and Jungkook laughing over Namjoonโ€™s gift. Christmas consequently serves as a domestic frame for their closeness, expressed not through a major declaration or dramatic turn, but through attention, shared presence, and humor.
