Obsesión

Obsesión is the Aventura song playing when Shelby and Jungkook meet on the dance floor at a student gathering. Its scene gives their attraction a public, physical expression: as they dance close together, the watching students see them as a couple whose bond appears unshakable, even though the relationship still faces difficulties.

The song in the scene

Jungkook has been playing a video game with other people while keeping his attention on Shelby, who is dancing with Cassiopée. Namjoon notices Jungkook watching her and urges him to join her, reasoning that he should not remain where he is. Jungkook leaves his game and goes to the dance floor; when Cassiopée sees him approach, she steps aside to dance with someone else. Obsesión then accompanies Shelby and Jungkook’s dance.

A public display of attraction

Jungkook takes Shelby by the waist and draws her close. She caresses his chest, while his hands rest against her lower back. Their movements are described as sensual and demonstrative, each responding to the other’s desire. The students watching them admire the pair, who appear, in that moment, like dancers in love and entirely absorbed in one another. The song marks the scene’s shift from Jungkook’s watchful distance to close, mutual contact.

Reactions and narrative significance

Cassiopée pauses her own flirtation to watch Shelby and Jungkook with a mixture of astonishment and admiration. Namjoon also stops to look at them, becoming convinced that they could be good together despite the ups and downs ahead. Obsesión is therefore associated with a moment when the relationship becomes legible to their friends as well as to the couple themselves: the dance does not resolve their future difficulties, but briefly gathers their desire and the surrounding characters’ hopes into one public scene.
