Seven Sins

𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐧𝐚 | 𝑱𝒆𝒐𝒏 𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒐𝒐𝒌

The seven deadly sins enter the story as a pointed rhetorical reference rather than a subject of theological discussion. Shelby Anderson Barnum invokes the traditional list during a confrontation with Andrew Wilson, identifying envy as one of its members and redirecting his mockery toward the possibility that he is envious of her relationship with Jungkook.

The Reference in Context

Andrew challenges Shelby over how she could accept a man like Jungkook. Before Jungkook can respond, Shelby makes him stand and moves away from him, then crouches in front of Andrew, who has sat down with Lexie’s help. She answers Andrew’s taunt by affirming that she believed in Jungkook and still does, then asks whether Andrew knows that envy is one of the seven deadly sins. The reference turns his attack into an accusation about his own conduct.

Rhetorical Function

Shelby’s appeal to the seven deadly sins is brief and pointed: it does not lead into an explanation of the whole list, but gives her a moral vocabulary with which to confront Andrew. By coupling envy with her continued faith in Jungkook, she shifts attention from the relationship Andrew ridicules to the hostility behind his taunt. She then ends the exchange without waiting for him to answer, rolls her eyes, and leads Jungkook into the house. In this scene, the phrase serves as a compact counterattack and a declaration of loyalty.
