August 2012

5 Centimeters per Second

August 2012 appears as an editorial and paratextual date rather than as a date for the story’s remembered events. Its placement at the book’s close frames the narrative of childhood attachment and separation as a recollection presented in a later publication context, while leaving the story’s internal chronology distinct from the book’s edition history.

Publication and Paratext

The book identifies itself as an expanded and corrected version of an edition published by MF Bunko J in August 2012. The month therefore records the earlier edition’s publication, not the timing of the childhood scenes recounted in the narrative. A separate closing note is dated to a lucky day in August 2012 and is followed by a respectful sign-off and an expression of hope for a future meeting. Together, these details make the month visible in the book’s framing material without establishing it as a date within the characters’ lives.

The Time Recalled

The narrative’s central childhood memories belong to a much earlier period. Takaki Tohno recalls the three years from fourth through sixth grade when he and Akari Shinohara, both children of fathers whose work required frequent moves, became close after transferring into a grade school in Tokyo. Their friendship took shape through shared routines, long conversations, books, and an intense exchange of knowledge about the world beyond their immediate surroundings. In retrospect, Takaki interprets that exchange as a possible response to their awareness that another separation might come.

Separation and Retrospective Distance

That feared change becomes concrete when Akari Shinohara tells Takaki Tohno they will attend different middle schools. After their graduation, he begins a new routine at the school they had once planned to attend together, using club practices and new friendships to fill the time once spent alone. Later, the prospect of Takaki’s move from Tokyo to an island off the coast of Kyushu makes their geographic distance seem final: although they had not met since the beginning of middle school, they had still been close enough to visit before the move. These recalled circumstances give the book’s August 2012 framing a clear temporal contrast: the date belongs to the publication and closing matter, while the emotional history it presents turns on childhood time, repeated moves, and the distance that followed.
