Quetzal Coatl graveyard

5 Centimeters per Second

The Quetzal Coatl graveyard is a crystal-filled place encountered by Ryuuji Morisaki after an exhausting climb. He awakens there drenched in water, finds his strength returning, and presses onward toward the Gate of Life and Death, so the graveyard marks both a recovery and a passage deeper into the perilous landscape he is traversing.

Appearance and Setting

Morisaki finds himself in a strange place surrounded by enormous crystals. The scene offers no further account of the graveyard’s layout or origin; its defining visible feature is the crystals growing around him. The name he gives the place identifies it as a graveyard associated with the Quetzal Coatls, while the surrounding expanse remains unfamiliar to him.

Morisaki’s Arrival

The graveyard follows a climb that would have been impossible for most people. Morisaki’s strength drains away and he collapses, his entire body and face drenched in water. He then sits up and observes that the Vita-aqua seems to have restored his strength. Only after looking around does he recognize the crystal-filled place as the Quetzal Coatl graveyard, linking his sudden recovery to his arrival there without explaining the water’s source or operation.

The Route to the Gate

Morisaki begins walking through the graveyard. Before long, he reaches a black sphere floating in empty space; recalling texts he had read in an old man’s library, he identifies it as the Gate of Life and Death. When he tries to touch the sphere, his arm is drawn into it instead. The graveyard thus serves as the setting immediately preceding this encounter: a place where Morisaki regains enough strength to continue, but where his next step brings him into contact with a force that acts on him rather than yielding to his approach.
