The Arch Angels’ pursuit and the opening of the secret passage
5 Centimeters per SecondThe Arch Angels’ pursuit and the opening of the secret passage form a turning point in Asuna’s journey: a bewildering reunion with Shun becomes a flight from armed pursuers, and the clavis changes from a coveted object into the means of entry to Agartha. The sequence links the organization’s forceful attempt to seize the clavis with the hidden route that Asuna and her companions ultimately uncover, while revealing that Ryuuji Morisaki has his own reason for seeking the underground world.
Reunion Under Threat
Asuna reaches the outcrop out of breath and finds Shun alive, dressed in an unfamiliar leather cloak and unconventional clothes. Her relief at seeing him does not last. When she reaches for him, he roughly shakes her off and asks who she is. He is openly wary, and his muttered question about whether someone has made contact with a Topsider makes clear that he does not greet Asuna as a familiar friend. Her reunion is therefore marked by both recognition and estrangement: she knows the person before her, but cannot understand his reaction or the circumstances surrounding him.
The Arch Angels Demand the Clavis
A helicopter rises into view in front of the outcrop, its wind and light forcing Asuna to shield her face. Shun identifies the arriving group as the Arch Angels and turns to leave, but three masked and goggle-wearing men in what appear to be military fatigues block his way with guns ready. Their faces are hidden, and the weaponry is beyond Asuna’s understanding; the scene makes the threat concrete before she can grasp its purpose. The central man steps toward them, asks whether Shun is from Agartha, and demands the clavis. The helicopter’s machine gun is pointed directly at the pair, although Asuna does not know it is a military helicopter. When two of the men prepare to fire, their leader stops them. Shun seizes Asuna’s hand and runs; then he leaps from the outcrop, catches her in his arms in midair, and plunges with her toward the forest below. The leap is presented as a desperate escape from an armed force, not a safe or ordinary descent: it is high enough that a normal person would expect to die from the fall.
The Clavis Opens the Hidden Way
At a later point in the escape, Asuna is urged to act and timidly touches the tip of the clavis to a light. The apparent door vanishes, revealing a stone corridor. Its worn, ancient-looking stones and scattered plants suggest age, yet the passage is in notably good condition, too neat to be dismissed as a ruin. The clavis thus does more than attract the Arch Angels’ attention: in Asuna’s hands, it makes a concealed route physically accessible.
Morisaki’s Disclosure and Agartha
Asuna is placed behind the armed boy, who keeps his short sword raised and his guard up. The masked man removes his mask, revealing himself as Ryuuji Morisaki, Asuna’s new teacher. He says he has no reason to fight them now that he has come this far and that he wants only to go to Agartha. His disclosure distinguishes his immediate objective from the Arch Angels’ demand for the clavis, even as the boy connects the surface organization with hopes that Agartha cannot fulfill. The passage has therefore brought the pursuit to a new threshold: Asuna has entered a route toward Agartha, while learning that Morisaki, the armed pursuers, and the boy do not share a single understanding of what lies there.
