Buddy—Hannah

A Dog's Journey

Buddy and Hannah’s relationship grows out of their shared love and loss of Ethan. After Ethan’s death, Buddy becomes a physical comfort to Hannah, offering the quiet presence of a dog who knows she is hurting; Hannah, in turn, sees Buddy as more than a companion, crediting him with helping reunite her with Ethan. Their bond culminates in a final journey to the veterinarian, where Hannah understands what Buddy is asking and stays beside him.

A Bond Formed in Shared Grief

Hannah’s closeness with Buddy is grounded in a grief he can sense even when he cannot understand its history. As she speaks about Ethan’s darkness after the fire and her own youth and inability to help him, Buddy remains beneath the table. Sensing sadness in Hannah, he moves to her and places his head in her lap. The gesture answers a need he can feel without requiring him to understand the conversation’s details. Hannah strokes his fur, and the scene makes comfort something physical and immediate: she touches him, and he stays with her.

The memory of Ethan deepens that connection. Hannah recalls that Ethan had a golden retriever named Bailey, whom he called his “doodle dog.” At the name, Buddy wags; he remembers Ethan using the same affectionate nickname, filling with love, hugging him, and receiving his kisses. Hearing Hannah speak of Bailey brings Ethan back into their shared present. Buddy misses Ethan more powerfully, and he senses that Hannah misses him too. He kisses the hand petting him; she lowers her eyes and smiles at the dog resting in her lap. The exchange links their grief without making it identical: each remembers Ethan from a different place, but the remembered dog and the woman touching him meet in the same moment.

Comfort After Ethan’s Death

Buddy’s care for Hannah continues after other losses unsettle the household. When Gloria and Clarity drive away, Hannah cries. Buddy sits with his head in her lap and tries to comfort her; he believes the gesture helps, though her sadness remains when she falls asleep. He does not know all that has happened, but he recognizes the distress that follows their departure and answers it with the familiar closeness he can offer.

After Ethan dies, Buddy begins sleeping on Hannah’s bed. She holds him at night, and sometimes cries while doing so. Buddy understands the source of her sorrow as missing Ethan, a grief they share. The bed becomes a recurring place of companionship: Hannah can hold the dog who belonged to Ethan, while Buddy remains beside the person who misses him. His presence does not erase the loss; it gives Hannah someone to touch and hold within it.

Hannah’s Recognition of What Buddy Means

Buddy’s attachment to Hannah also carries a history she explicitly recognizes. During the drive to see Doctor Deb, Hannah often reaches out to touch him. When she speaks, he senses her sadness and licks the hand stroking him. She tells him that seeing him reminds her of Ethan, and calls him Ethan’s companion and special friend. More than that, she says Buddy led her back to Ethan: his arrival at her doorstep helped bring them together again. She credits him with doing something no dog could do more for the people he loved.

That recognition gives their relationship a shape beyond consolation after Ethan’s death. For Hannah, Buddy is both the dog she cares for now and a living connection to the earlier bond between Ethan and his dog. For Buddy, hearing Ethan’s name makes him happy, and Hannah’s repeated praise that he is a “good dog” affirms the loving role he remembers. Her account turns his presence into part of their shared history: he has not merely stayed beside her in grief; in her understanding, he helped restore the relationship whose loss they now mourn.

The Final Journey

As Buddy grows old, his body makes the care between them newly visible. After jumping down from Hannah’s bed, he feels a sudden break of pain in his left hip and yelps. Later, he struggles to stand, limps to her bedside, and rests his head beside her on the blanket. His stomach and throat hurt, and his leg continues to throb. Looking into Hannah’s eyes, he tries to show her what he needs, trusting that the woman who loved both him and Ethan will understand. She does: she recognizes that it is time and agrees to take him.

On the drive to see Doctor Deb, Buddy rides in the front seat. Snow still lies among the densest trees, while the yard where he and Ethan once played has cleared. The changing landscape brings Ethan to mind, and Buddy’s tail thumps at the imagined memory of Ethan calling him a good dog. Hannah reaches out to touch him during the ride; he licks the hand that carries her sadness. The journey holds their connection to Ethan alongside the knowledge that Buddy’s own life is nearing its end.

At the clinic, Hannah waits while Doctor Deb and another man carry Buddy inside and place him on a metal bed. The pain makes him pant and leaves him unable to wag. Hannah whispers that he is a good dog; Buddy focuses on her as she smiles and cries, while Doctor Deb examines the skin near his neck. He understands that they do not have much time left together. Hannah’s presence on this last visit completes the pattern of their relationship: she has read his need, answered it, and remained with him as he reaches the end of his life.

Significance of Their Relationship

Buddy and Hannah’s bond is expressed less through explanation than through repeated acts of contact: a head resting in a lap, a hand stroking fur, a dog licking that hand, and Hannah holding him at night. These small gestures recur across different kinds of sorrow, from Ethan’s absence to the departure of Gloria and Clarity, and finally to Buddy’s own pain. The relationship is reciprocal without being identical. Buddy senses and responds to Hannah’s sadness; Hannah understands his bodily signals and recognizes when he is asking to leave.

Their connection also joins separate generations of loss and affection. Hannah remembers Bailey as Ethan’s dog and understands Buddy’s arrival as part of her return to Ethan. Buddy, meanwhile, carries the remembered love of Ethan into his companionship with Hannah. In the final journey, these strands converge: Hannah comforts the dog she associates with Ethan, and Buddy remains focused on the woman who has understood him. Their farewell is the last expression of the care that has defined their life together.
