Gloria Abandons Molly at the Animal Shelter
A Dog's JourneyGloria Abandons Molly at the Animal Shelter is a deliberate separation disguised as a rescue: Gloria coaxes Molly into her car with food, removes her collar, and presents her to shelter staff as a stray. Because CJ does not know what has happened, Molly’s return depends on her being recognized and reclaimed. The episode ends in reunion, but it also reveals that CJ’s mother has acted against her without her knowledge, leaving the home itself newly uncertain as a safe place for Molly.
The Lure in the Snow
One day, while Molly is bounding through deep new snow in the backyard, Gloria appears at the sliding door and offers roast beef. Molly hesitates, unsure whether the question is a treat or a sign that she is in trouble. When Gloria tosses the meat into the snow, Molly finds it by smell and eats it; her experimental wag shows how cautiously she responds. The first offering establishes food as the means by which Gloria can draw her close, even though Molly does not yet understand what the attention means.
Gloria calls again from the front yard, where the gate stands open. The walk has been cleared by the man who comes by in a truck on winter mornings, and Molly trots around the house to find Gloria waiting in the driveway. Another piece of meat, caught in the air, is followed by an invitation to get into the car. Gloria tosses food onto the rear floor, and Molly jumps in to eat it; once the door is shut, Gloria drives away. Molly accepts the rear seat rather than the front, watches the snowy trees and yards, then circles and lies down to nap. Her ease in the car makes the coming separation more abrupt: she has followed the familiar promise of a treat, not chosen to leave CJ.
At the Shelter
When the car stops, Gloria turns around and tells Molly to be careful and nice because she has been given a treat. Molly wags at the sound of her name and sniffs Gloria’s hands, expecting food. Instead, Gloria reaches around Molly’s throat and unfastens her collar. The collar falls onto the seat; Molly lowers her nose to it, while Gloria gets out, opens the door, and leads her toward a building that reeks of dogs.
The shelter’s small entrance room opens onto a crowded-sounding interior: Molly hears more than a dozen dogs barking. Gloria calls for assistance and tells the woman who comes out that she found a poor dog abandoned in the streets, far from her family, and asks whether this is where lost dogs are dropped off. The account reverses what has happened. Gloria has brought Molly there herself, but describes herself as the finder rather than the person relinquishing her. Inside, Molly recognizes the place as somewhat like the facility where she and CJ visited Andi and Luke, but the shelter has many more dogs, a low ceiling, cramped aisles, and cages instead of a large seating area.
Recognition and Reclaiming
Molly is returned to her cage after a man says he knew she would be chipped. A few hours later, he comes back, calls her by name, and slips a rope around her neck, saying that someone has come to see her. Molly smells CJ as soon as he opens the door at the end of the hall. CJ calls to her, kneels, and wraps her arms around her; Molly rushes to her, licks her face and ear, and circles with the rope trailing and tangling behind her. Her crying expresses the relief of reunion, while CJ laughs and asks her to sit. Molly struggles to sit but obeys, wagging as CJ speaks with the man.
CJ explains that she had been worried and thinks Molly got out through the gate when the man came to shovel after the heavy snow. Her explanation shows that she has not known Gloria took Molly to the shelter. When CJ asks about a blond-haired woman and shows a picture, the man declines to say whether the woman brought in the dog. CJ identifies her as her mother. The recognition turns a confusing disappearance into a family betrayal: the woman who has left Molly at the shelter is not a stranger but CJ’s mother, and CJ says she had not been told.
Aftermath and Significance
In the car, Molly rides in the front seat beside CJ, who says she missed her and feared something would happen to her. She holds Molly close; Molly licks her face, then puts her head in CJ’s lap, as she did when she was a puppy. Although the passing view offers things to watch, Molly turns her attention to CJ and quickly falls asleep. Their physical closeness restores a familiar bond after the cage and the separation, but it does not resolve what brought them there.
Back home, CJ holds Molly’s head in both hands and says the house is not safe for her: CJ does not know what she will do and cannot trust Gloria not to hurt Molly. The shelter return therefore produces more than relief. It exposes the limits of CJ’s ability to protect Molly while they remain in the same household, and makes the reunion carry a warning about the next separation. The contrast between Gloria’s treats and CJ’s embrace is central to the episode: food first draws Molly away under false pretenses, while recognition and affection bring her back to the person she has been missing.
