Bella escapes animal control and finds Olivia

A Dog's Way Home

Bella escapes an apparent animal-control capture attempt and finds Olivia at the VA hospital, turning a pursuit away from Lucas into the first reunion with someone from her human family. The encounter brings her within reach of home, but it also reveals how long she has been missing: Olivia says that more than two years have passed since Bella was sent away and then disappeared.

Background and Stakes

Bella reaches this encounter after a long effort to get back to Lucas. At this point she does not know where he is; her immediate purpose is to keep moving toward the person she understands as home. The approaching truck interrupts that effort before she has reached their street. It carries dog smells and dog crates, and its driver gets out when she stops. The scene presents the truck not as a route to safety but as a threat to her chance of returning.

The man is familiar to Bella. Though she remembers that he has offered her a treat before, she does not trust the gesture now: she believes he will keep her from Lucas and do so angrily. That recognition matters to the escape. Bella does not wait for him to approach or accept his invitation; she judges the situation from her experience and acts to preserve her freedom of movement. The book identifies this episode as an escape from animal control, while the scene itself focuses on the truck, its crates, and the looped rope used to catch her.

The stakes are therefore immediate and personal. Being caught would separate Bella from the route she has chosen and place her in the hands of people she associates with being kept from Lucas. Her response is not to approach the man, but to turn away and run.

The Escape

Bella cuts through yards as the truck starts and follows. She reaches her street, passes her former house, and runs along a sidewalk beside a busy road before darting through traffic and across a parking lot. The pursuit continues behind her. Each change of direction buys movement rather than certainty: she can hear that the truck is still coming closer, and her destination remains the familiar place she calls Go to Work.

At the entrance, however, no one is there to let her in. Bella continues along the building and past people sitting outside. When the truck enters the parking lot behind her, she reaches a large glass door. It slides open automatically. She has never entered through that door before, but the open entrance gives her a way in, and she takes it. The contrast is sharp: outside, the truck closes distance; inside, the building offers a path away from it.

The interior is busy, with people moving about, sitting, and talking. A woman behind the desk reacts with alarm, and another person asks whose dog has come in. Bella does not stop to respond. In the crowded room, she cannot immediately identify anyone by smell, so she keeps moving until a familiar voice calls her name. The turn from flight to recognition depends on that voice: amid unfamiliar people, it gives her a direction she can follow.

Finding Olivia

Olivia is standing across a room filled with people and chairs. She drops papers as she recognizes Bella, and the two rush toward one another. Olivia kneels; Bella jumps up to lick her face, then drops down and rises again to reach her. Their reunion is physical and immediate, expressed through movement, contact, and Bella’s whimpering rather than an explanation of the journey between them. Olivia laughs as Bella’s excitement makes her fall backward, and Bella licks tears from her cheeks.

Olivia’s response confirms that this is not a chance encounter with someone merely familiar. She says that she and the others searched hard for Bella. Bella, for her part, detects Lucas’s scent on Olivia and takes this as assurance that Olivia can lead her to him. She believes her long journey is over and circles Olivia, trying to climb up to her face. That belief belongs to Bella’s understanding of the reunion: she has found a person connected to Lucas, but Lucas himself is not yet present in the scene.

The setting also echoes an earlier visit to hospital rooms, where Bella had been welcomed by patients and had comforted Mack when he was sad. That earlier experience shows her moving among people in a care setting, though the later entrance is not presented as a planned return to those rooms. Here, urgency rather than invitation carries her through the doorway, and the familiar voice she hears inside—not prior knowledge of the entrance—brings her to Olivia.

What Olivia Reveals

When another woman asks whether Bella is Olivia’s dog, Olivia first clarifies that Bella belongs to her fiancé. She then explains the separation that Bella cannot understand: Lucas and Olivia had to send Bella away because of Denver’s breed laws. After Lucas found a place to live, they went to retrieve her, but Bella had already run away. They searched throughout Durango, put up posters, and eventually feared that something bad had happened to her.

This account reframes Bella’s absence. She has not simply been overlooked or forgotten; the separation began under pressure from breed laws, and her disappearance followed before Lucas could bring her back. Olivia’s account also establishes the scale of the loss for the people searching: they had travelled around Durango and posted notices, but had no way to know that Bella had survived and was still trying to return. Her astonishment at finding Bella after more than two years makes the reunion a reversal of what the family had come to fear.

For Bella, however, the explanation is carried through Olivia’s presence and the scent of Lucas on her. She leans into Olivia as Olivia apologizes and asks about her missing collar. The escape has brought Bella to a person who can connect the years of separation to the people she is seeking. The event ends with that connection restored, but before Lucas arrives: Bella has escaped capture and found Olivia, and her hope of reaching Lucas has become tangible again.
