Fish

A Dog's Way Home

Fish have a small but distinct role in Bella’s wilderness journey: they are food she can seize from people, but not prey she and Big Kitten can reliably catch for themselves. The contrast makes fish a measure of the pair’s changing fortunes and of the limits of their cooperation as hunters.

Fish as Stolen Food

While traveling with Big Kitten, Bella encountered a man standing in a stream beside a sack of wet fish. She took the entire bag and ran as he pursued her, continuing until he fell behind and stopped. Bella did not understand the words he shouted, but recognized his anger. She nevertheless understood the act as hunting rather than misbehavior, and she and Big Kitten ate all the fish.

The episode presents fish as an unusually substantial meal obtained through opportunity rather than a successful hunt. Bella’s taking of the catch also brings her into direct conflict with a person, but the immediate result is food shared with her companion.

The Failed Stream Hunt

Later, Bella and Big Kitten tried to catch fish in a shallow stream, where fish moved beneath the surface. Bella lunged repeatedly, but neither animal caught any; the attempt left them wet. When Big Kitten plunged too far into the water and briefly went under, she scrambled out in alarm, ending the hunt.

Unlike the fish in the stolen sack, these fish remained beyond the pair’s reach. The scene shows that having a potential food source nearby did not mean the two could obtain it: their efforts failed, and Big Kitten’s fear of water further limited their attempt.

Narrative Significance

Fish recur in only a few encounters, and the story does not identify their species. Their importance lies in the contrast between a ready-made catch taken from a human and live prey that Bella and Big Kitten cannot secure. In both scenes, fish are tied to the practical pressures of finding food, while the outcomes reveal different circumstances: one meal follows Bella’s successful theft, and the later effort ends without a catch.
