Lucas relinquishes Bella to animal control
A Dog's Way HomeLucas relinquishes Bella to animal control in a farewell shaped by protection rather than rejection. He tries to soften the separation with her blanket and a familiar treat, but Bella cannot understand why he is leaving her; as the car carries her away, she feels once again like a bad dog.
Background and Stakes
By this point, Bella’s bond with Lucas is built on care and trust. Earlier, she accompanied him into hospital rooms, where patients welcomed and petted her. When Ty brought her to Mack, Bella recognized his sadness and climbed onto his chair to comfort him. Lucas had also read that some dogs can sense seizures, and Terri agreed that Bella seemed to know what was happening. These scenes establish Bella as a source of comfort to others, but the farewell turns on Lucas’s own stated fear: he believes he has no other way to protect her.
The Farewell
Audrey clips a leash to Bella’s collar and leads her to a car. Olivia and Terri stand together on the porch to say goodbye. Lucas places Bella in a crate inside the car and arranges her dog blanket so she has somewhere soft to lie. He offers her a Tiny Piece of Cheese, a familiar ritual that Bella accepts without understanding its meaning. Lucas leaves his fingers at the crate after she takes the treat, and Bella senses his grief. He tells her that this may be goodbye, apologizes, and assures her that she will always be his dog, even though he can no longer protect her in any other way.
When the car door closes, Bella sees Lucas crying through the glass and whimpers as she is driven away. The departure makes the separation concrete: Lucas has not merely handed her into someone else’s care; he has left her behind while she remains unable to comprehend why. Her immediate conclusion is that she has become a bad dog again.
Consequences and Significance
The next chapter follows Bella as Audrey takes her farther from Lucas. His presence recedes, but his scent remains in the blanket, which Bella treats as a tangible connection to him. The object meant to comfort her therefore also sharpens the loss: she carries something of Lucas with her while being unable to return to him.
The episode places the human meaning of the decision beside Bella’s limited understanding of it. Lucas acts from the conviction that separation is the only protection he can provide; Bella experiences only the sudden disappearance of the person she trusts. His reassurance that she will always be his dog cannot make the departure intelligible to her, and the scene initiates her life away from Lucas.
