CJ and Trent’s Wedding

A Dog's Journey

CJ and Trent’s Wedding is both a celebration of their marriage and a rare gathering of people from the families and relationships that have shaped their lives. Through Max’s attentive, exuberant perspective, the wedding becomes a scene of reunion as well as commitment: he discovers that Trent’s parents and sister Carolina are there, while CJ and Trent make their promise of a life together in front of the assembled guests.

Family Tensions Before the Wedding

The wedding takes place against a history of strained choices about CJ’s care and independence. At one point, Hannah proposes that Clarity stay with her family, where relatives could share the care and Gloria might have more freedom to pursue singing. The suggestion offers one picture of family support: care distributed among relatives rather than resting on a single household.

Other exchanges between CJ and Gloria make clear that their relationship has also been marked by conflict. CJ threatens to tell others that Gloria left her alone in the house, including when she was twelve; Gloria replies that CJ had wanted to be alone and disliked the babysitter. Later, Gloria says she has consulted a family-law attorney about forcing CJ to move home and argues that she need not be held prisoner in her own house by a dog. These disputes over supervision, home, and Max sit behind the wedding’s warmer images without being shown as neatly resolved by it.

The question of family connection remains unsettled, too. CJ challenges Gloria’s refusal to have anything to do with a family Gloria considers horrible, insisting that blood ties matter to her and that she wants to know where she comes from. The wedding’s gathering of relatives therefore carries particular weight: family appears not as a simple, harmonious unit, but as a network of relationships that CJ has had to seek and contest.

The Ceremony and Reunion

The wedding unfolds in a large room with people seated in rows. Trent initially holds Max, but Max wriggles free when he recognizes Cindy, Rachel, and Hannah by their scent. Rachel scoops him up and brings him to Hannah, whom Max approaches gently because she seems frail and is continually supported by someone at her side. The reunion is physical and immediate: Rachel holds him close, and he licks Hannah’s face.

Max is startled to see Trent’s sister Carolina and Trent’s mother and father there as well. He had never smelled them around Trent and had assumed they were no longer alive. Their presence changes his understanding of Trent’s family, while the gathering brings CJ and Trent into the company of relatives and loved ones from more than one part of their lives.

Wearing something soft on his back, Max walks with CJ among the guests toward Trent. He sits with them while they talk; when the couple kiss, the people in the room cheer and Max barks. The wedding is conveyed less as a formal sequence of rites than as a set of encounters—recognition, approach, touch, conversation, and shared celebration—experienced at Max’s level among the people gathered around the couple.

A Celebration Seen Through Max

The room’s abundance registers through its details. Tables draped with cloth create sheltered spaces beneath them, with guests’ legs and morsels of meat and fish within Max’s reach. Flowers and plants fill the room with enticing scents. Children chase and play with him, and when Trent carries him outside to do his business, Max is eager to return indoors.

CJ’s wedding clothes become another small, intimate part of the celebration. Their large folds make a little space around her legs, and Max crawls underneath. CJ giggles, reaches in to pull him out, and later scoops him up and kisses the top of his head. These moments place the dog’s familiar playfulness inside the wedding without interrupting its significance: the celebration belongs to CJ and Trent, but Max is fully included in their happiness.

Vows and Significance

The couple’s exchange makes the event’s central commitment explicit. Trent tells CJ, “It’s a perfect day. I love you, CJ.” CJ answers, “I love you, too, Trent.” After complimenting her as a bride, Trent promises, “For as long as you want. Forever. You’re my wife forever.” Their words give the wedding a clear emotional resolution: the affection that has brought them to this gathering becomes a vow of lasting partnership.

Max’s response is characteristically physical and uncomplicated. He wags as the couple kiss, having already followed the current of affection among them and their guests. The scene joins intimate promises to collective celebration, while the unexpected presence of Trent’s family and CJ’s reunion with Hannah’s circle widen the meaning of the day beyond the marriage alone. It is a promise made in public, surrounded by people whose presence makes the couple’s new bond part of a larger community.
