Henry

A Dog's Journey

Henry is CJ’s deceased father, remembered chiefly through the trust he established for her before his death in a plane crash. Though absent from the events narrated, his provision was meant to support CJ’s life and became central to her understanding of what she had inherited—and of what had been lost.

Identity and Background

Henry died in a plane crash. His daughter CJ was young enough that the surviving evidence presents him chiefly through family recollection and the financial arrangements he left behind, rather than through scenes of his life.

The Trust and Its Purpose

Henry set up a trust so CJ could live. CJ understood the money as her college fund as well as her inheritance. When Gloria explained that she had spent it, she described the withdrawals as expenses for CJ, including food and housing, and cited family trips such as a cruise. CJ rejected that account, believing the fund had also paid for Gloria’s vacations and personal purchases. The conflict turns Henry’s provision into a measure of the difference between a parent’s intended security and the daughter’s experience of its disappearance.

Family Aftermath and Narrative Role

Hannah later told CJ that, after Henry’s death, Gloria moved many times. Hannah regretted not intervening more forcefully, perhaps by hiring her own lawyer, but CJ answered that Gloria’s threat to sue would have been credible. Henry’s death thus remains part of a longer history of separation and missed opportunities for protection. His lasting presence in the story is neither a remembered portrait nor direct guidance: it is the trust he created, whose depletion exposes how little control CJ had over the resources intended for her.
