Bella returns to her former home and finds Lucas gone

A Dog's Way Home

Bella’s return to her former home turns the promise of Go Home into a painful discovery: the familiar address remains, but Lucas is no longer there. After crossing from wilderness into streets and navigating a rebuilt neighborhood, she reaches the door expecting to find her person. Instead, an unfamiliar woman gives her food and water, and Bella must resume her search.

The Journey Into Town

The return begins after Bella’s vivid dreams gather people and animals from her past around her as if to say goodbye. In the morning, she climbs another long hill and descends into a landscape whose obstacles are no longer rocks and slopes but fences and buildings. She cannot keep a straight course. Instead, she patiently winds through streets, passing houses, hearing dogs, and seeing people. Though adults stare and children call out, she ignores them and keeps moving in the direction she believes is home.

As evening fades, the lit streets feel more comfortable to her than the exposure of daylight. She continues through the night without sleeping. With sunrise, the streets grow noisy and she feels exposed again, but she recognizes a park where she had been with Lucas and Olivia. The recognition gives way to urgency: she is close, and she breaks into a heedless run. The urban journey thus narrows from uncertain navigation to the confidence of a remembered route.

A Familiar Street Made Strange

When Bella turns onto her street, she slows. The row of low, dirty houses across from her former home has disappeared. The house where the cat den had been is gone too; tall buildings now occupy the space, and the smell of many people pours from open windows. Her return is not to a preserved childhood landscape but to a place physically altered beyond easy recognition. The remembered route still brings her to the right street, yet the landmarks that once made the neighborhood legible have been replaced.

Bella nevertheless performs the action she understands as Go Home. She does not curl against the wall as she had been taught. She scratches at the door, wags, and barks for Lucas. A woman opens it and greets her. Familiar smells emerge, but Bella cannot smell Lucas or Terri. Some odors belong to her past, while the woman at the door supplies the strongest scent of the present. The crucial absence is therefore registered not just as a person missing from the room but as a change in what home smells like.

The House and Its New Occupant

The woman asks Bella’s name and whether she is lost, noticing that she has no collar. Bella pushes past her into the bedroom, then returns to the kitchen. She approaches the woman with a wagging tail, hoping she can explain or somehow repair what has happened. The woman gives her water and meat treats. Bella eats gratefully, but the kindness cannot resolve the problem: she realizes that this woman cannot help her find Lucas.

The recognition becomes plain and final. Lucas is gone. The house may contain some familiar odors and offer food, but without Lucas it cannot answer the purpose of Bella’s return. Her need to leave presses in immediately. This is not Go Home without Lucas; unable to make sense of the change, she can think only of getting back on the trail.

A Kind Farewell, Not a Reunion

Bella waits by the door, looking from the woman to the exit. The woman cups Bella’s chin and understands that she has come for an important reason in which the woman herself has no part. Bella hears kindness in her voice and wags. Rather than detaining her or claiming to know where Lucas is, the woman hopes Bella finds what she is looking for and opens the door. Bella trots outside and does not look back when the woman calls goodbye.

The event reverses the expected meaning of a homecoming. Bella successfully reaches the place she remembers, but the journey delivers neither reunion nor a restored home. That failure does not end her search; it redirects it. Earlier, Bella had wanted to continue Go Home but stayed with Axel, valuing the warmth and attention he gave her and understanding that comforting a person in need was what Lucas would have wanted. Her return to the trail follows that period of care, but the familiar house confirms that reaching an address is not the same as finding Lucas. Bella leaves with no new destination beyond the search itself, carrying forward the belief that she must keep going.
