Olivia
A Dog's Way HomeOlivia is Lucas’s fiancée and one of the people who helps make Bella’s eventual return possible. Her importance rests on two acts of loyalty: she and Lucas search for Bella after she disappears, and when Bella reaches her again, Olivia protects their reunion rather than surrendering the dog to an officer.
Identity and Relationship
Olivia is engaged to Lucas, and Bella recognizes the connection before she can see Lucas himself: Olivia carries his scent. When the two meet again, Olivia identifies Bella as her fiancé’s dog, making clear that Bella remains part of the family she shares with Lucas even after years apart.
Olivia’s bond with Bella is affectionate and physical. At their reunion, she drops to her knees, embraces Bella, and receives the dog’s licking, circling, and excited attempts to climb up to her. Olivia rubs Bella’s ears and acknowledges that she cannot know what the dog endured. Bella’s response—leaning into her and staying close—turns Olivia into the first recognizable link back to Lucas and home.
Care and Shared Experience
Olivia also supports Terri. She gives Terri a ride, although Terri says she felt well enough to walk. Later that night, Lucas tells Terri that he has read that fifteen percent of dogs can sense seizures. Terri agrees that Bella seemed to know what was happening, and Lucas praises the dog. Olivia is not present in the exchange, but her ride places her among the people helping Terri, while the conversation shows how Bella’s attentive behavior has become something Lucas and Terri recognize together.
Separation and Search
Olivia explains that Bella had been sent away because of Denver’s breed laws. By the time Lucas found somewhere to live and they went to retrieve her, Bella had run away. Olivia and Lucas searched throughout Durango and put up posters; eventually, fearing that something bad had happened, they believed they might never find her. Their search gives the reunion its weight: Bella’s return is not simply an unexpected encounter, but the answer to a long period of uncertainty.
The Hospital Standoff
At the Denver VA hospital, Olivia’s relief gives way to anger when the question arises whether she should bring Bella out to an officer. Olivia refuses. The response is unusual for her, but she does not let the officer’s authority decide Bella’s fate. Her refusal keeps Bella with the people she has finally found.
Afterward, Olivia places her hands on Bella, who registers the contact as an overwhelming expression of love. Terri then says she must return to her meeting and gives Bella one last pat before going inside. Olivia’s reunion with Bella thus joins two forms of belonging: the family Bella has crossed the country to find and the wider circle of friends gathered around her.
