Kyiv is both Katerina Litvinova’s place of origin and the destination Mishka follows her to after their relationship takes shape in Saint Petersburg. The city anchors her life beyond the capital’s literary circles: there she teaches elementary school, while Mishka takes leave from his university post to be with her.

Katerina’s Connection to Kyiv

Katerina is introduced as a talented young poet from Kyiv and a second-year university student. She and Mishka sit on a committee together, placing their first connection within a shared literary and institutional world. Her identification with Kyiv, however, remains important even as the story follows their developing relationship elsewhere.

From Saint Petersburg to Kyiv

After the 1923 congress, Mishka’s growing interest in Katerina becomes clear to Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov. Katerina and Mishka later spend an autumn afternoon speaking privately in an alcove of the old Imperial Library. When the library closes, they continue their conversation along Nevsky Prospekt and walk to Tikhvin Cemetery, where Katerina takes Mishka’s hand at a spot overlooking the Neva River.

Their subsequent separation makes Kyiv a destination as well as Katerina’s point of origin. A hotel receptionist’s message explains that Katerina is unwell and that Mishka is returning to Saint Petersburg earlier than planned. Later, he takes leave from his university post and follows her back to Kyiv, where she is teaching in an elementary school.

Personal and Literary Consequences

Mishka’s move to Kyiv coincides with a shift in his work. While the Fourth Annual Congress of the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers is underway, he is absent, having taken leave to finish a five-volume short-story anthology and follow Katerina. The evidence does not describe Kyiv in detail as a city; its significance here comes through these linked choices. It is where Katerina’s poetic identity gives way to the work of teaching, and where Mishka’s private attachment redirects both his professional routine and his immediate plans.
