Anita Blake
A History of the Vampire in Popular CultureAnita Blake is the eponymous protagonist of Laurell K. Hamilton’s “Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter” series and one of the clearest modern revisions of the vampire-hunter figure. She begins as a professional killer of vampires and raiser of zombies, operating in a parallel version of St. Louis, Missouri, where supernatural beings live alongside humans and the police can employ specialists such as her. Her decisive significance lies in the tension between institutional legitimacy and personal judgment: Blake’s work is sanctioned, but she is still, in effect, a legitimised murderer, required to decide for herself whether a prospective target is truly guilty and deserves a final death. Across the series, that hard authority does not disappear, but it becomes entangled with emotional, sexual, and ethical involvement with the very beings she was trained to destroy.
