Daniella Ortiz

A Killer’s Mind

Daniella Ortiz is a Pilsen art student and one of Susan Warner’s friends. Her small, photograph-filled apartment and her account of when she last saw Susan place her within Zoe Bentley’s effort to understand Susan’s disappearance; later, Zoe considers whether Daniella might also know Rod Glover, though that connection remains only a hypothesis in the available evidence.

Identity and Home

Daniella lives in a tiny two-bedroom apartment in Pilsen, a Chicago neighborhood known for its thriving art scene. Art students gravitate there, including Daniella and Susan. The shared artistic setting gives their friendship a local context, but the evidence does not specify how they met or what they did together.

The apartment’s living room is small, much like Zoe Bentley’s living room back in Dale City, but its walls are markedly different: Daniella has covered them with framed photographs. The crowded decoration makes the room feel even smaller and almost claustrophobic. When Zoe and Tatum Gray visit, Daniella welcomes them in and offers them something to drink, receiving their questions in her home.

Connection to Susan Warner

Daniella had known Susan for about a year, perhaps a little longer, before Susan was killed. Ryan, Daniella’s boyfriend, met Susan only after he and Daniella began dating and had known her for just a couple of months. The difference in their acquaintance gives Daniella the longer perspective on Susan, although the interview’s early questions do not produce many details: when asked whether Susan had mentioned her neighbors, Daniella says no.

Daniella says she last saw Susan about a week before Susan disappeared, when she went to visit her. Zoe asks what they discussed, but the available evidence does not supply Daniella’s answer. Her testimony therefore establishes a specific last meeting and a rough interval before Susan vanished without revealing what was said during the visit.

Later Significance to Zoe’s Inquiry

Years later, Zoe’s fear that she may not be listened to leads her to seek more information about Susan. She reasons that if Rod Glover had known Susan, he might have known she was alone; from that possibility, Zoe wonders whether Daniella knew him. This is Zoe’s investigative conjecture, not confirmation that Daniella and Glover were acquainted.

When Zoe visits Daniella late at night, Daniella seems subdued. Her earlier cheerful rainbow outfit has given way to black yoga pants and a pink shirt bearing the words LIVE SLOW, DIE WHENEVER; her eyes look puffy. She nevertheless says Zoe is welcome and that she is glad to have company. The contrast in her appearance marks a change in the mood of the encounter, but the evidence does not establish its cause. Daniella’s role in the available account is thus both personal and investigative: she is a friend who can place herself near Susan in the weeks before her disappearance, and a possible source Zoe considers as she tests a theory about Glover.
