Croker Global Foods warehouse
A Man in FullCroker Global Foods warehouse is a large, partly refrigerated food-distribution facility that becomes a crucial waypoint in Conrad Hensley’s flight after the earthquake. Its dark bulk, emergency-powered freezer unit, and rows of parked cars turn it from a workplace into a test of whether Conrad can find help without exposing himself.
Setting and Operations
The warehouse stands near the bay, roughly thirty or thirty-five miles north of Conrad’s position after the earthquake. Its immense structure is difficult to make out in the darkness, and electricity is out throughout the area. The facility’s freezer unit, however, has backup generators to protect its racks of frozen product, and Croker Global trucks serve the loading platform.
The usual Sunday-night schedule matters to Conrad’s search: the freezer unit comes to work at 9 p.m. He knows Kenny has worked there, but cannot be sure that Kenny is still employed or that an emergency has not changed his shift. The warehouse is therefore a possible point of contact, not a certain one.
The Earthquake and the Warehouse
At first, the site appears inert and deserted. From outside, Conrad sees the building’s dark silhouette and assumes the workers have been sent home. As he gets closer, the scene changes: light spills from the freezer unit onto the loading platform, trucks are moving, and their air brakes can be heard. The generators have kept at least part of the operation going despite the widespread power failure.
The contrast between the warehouse’s apparent shutdown and its limited emergency activity sharpens the uncertainty of Conrad’s search. There are fewer cars than usual, but enough to suggest that some employees remain. The food supply has been protected by the backup system, while Conrad has no comparable assurance about who is inside or what the changed conditions will mean for him.
Conrad’s Search for Kenny
Conrad remembers that Kenny might be working the Sunday-night shift and decides the warehouse is the only person or place he can turn to. He is a fugitive from Santa Rita Jail, has escaped during the earthquake, and fears that anyone inside—including Dom—would recognize him if he simply walked into the unit. His hope that Kenny will help him or contact Jill is immediately checked by his own uncertainty: he does not know what Kenny would do, or whether he is even there.
Driving slowly among the cars, Conrad finally sees Kenny’s low-slung car in the headlights. He stops beside it, switches off the Jeep’s engine and lights, and sinks back into the seat, exhausted and physically battered. Finding the car confirms that Kenny’s vehicle is at the warehouse; it does not establish that Kenny is present. Conrad decides to wait rather than enter, while worrying that Kenny may be kept inside for emergency overtime and that staying outside in a battle-camouflaged U.S. Army vehicle may itself be dangerous. The warehouse thus offers a fragile possibility of help, but the scene ends with Conrad still waiting.
