Golden Retriever

A Man in Full

Golden Retriever refers to Ronald and Roland, a pair of littermates in Charlie Croker’s hunting party. Carried with the pointers in a kennel wagon, they become important at the moment Charlie’s shooting is tested: they retrieve both birds from the underbrush and bring them to Lonnie, who delivers them to Charlie.

Place in the Hunting Party

Ronald and Roland travel in a rolling dog kennel alongside three additional pairs of pointers, which take turns ranging through the sedge in search of quail. The retrievers are identified as a pair born in the same litter, distinguishing them within the larger working group of dogs assembled for the shoot.

Retrieval and Confirmation

After Charlie shoots at a covey, Ronald and Roland fetch both birds from the underbrush. Lonnie brings the warm birds to Charlie, who turns up their beaks and sees the white throat patches that identify them as male quail. Their retrieval makes the result tangible and helps confirm Charlie’s claim that he has shot two males from the covey. The dogs’ part in the scene is practical rather than symbolic: they complete the chain from shot to recovered birds, allowing Charlie’s boast to be verified.
