Portland

A Man in Full

Portland is a crucial waypoint in Conrad Hensley’s flight from California after escaping Santa Rita. Mai and Kenny arrange for him to reach the city by truck, then continue by air to Atlanta, turning Portland into a link in a discreet route toward safety rather than his final destination.

A Waypoint in the Escape

As Conrad considers where he can go without being found, Kenny gives him a ticket from Portland to Atlanta, departing at ten that night. Portland is presented as a safer option than Oakland or San Francisco, while Atlanta offers a place where Mai can immediately organize practical support for him. The itinerary therefore joins concealment to onward movement: Portland is a protected staging point, not the end of the journey.

The Route and Its Helpers

Mai supplies Conrad with another envelope containing the name Lum Loc, the Vietnamese contact who will meet him at the Atlanta airport and drive him to an apartment. To get Conrad to Portland, Kenny and Mai introduce him to Torin Singh, one of Mai’s associates, who is making his regular truck run there. They walk Conrad out to Singh’s large rig, parked on Shattuck Avenue, and place him in the care of a driver whose established route makes the first leg of the plan possible.

Narrative Significance

Portland’s importance lies in the chain of arrangements attached to it. The ticket, the truck run, the airport contact, and the promised apartment convert Conrad’s escape from a desperate departure into a coordinated passage between people willing to help him. The city also marks the point where Kenny’s assistance becomes a farewell: before Conrad leaves, he asks Kenny to tell his wife that he is safe and will be in touch, while Kenny asks only for a postcard from Atlanta. Portland thus stands between the danger Conrad has left behind and the uncertain refuge awaiting him.
