Japan’s bubble economy period

A Man

Japan’s bubble economy period marks the earlier prosperity against which Town S’s later decline is measured: redevelopment brought flourishing commerce to the town center, but that energy did not last along Mera Road.

Redevelopment and Local Prosperity

During Japan’s bubble economy period, the center of Town S was redeveloped and flourished. The period is presented through this concrete local change, rather than through a broader account of national economic conditions.

The Later Contrast

The shopping stretch along Mera Road subsequently lost businesses as a low birth rate and an aging population reshaped the town. Many storefronts closed permanently, and the street acquired the rueful nickname “Showa Burial Mound.” Seibundo Stationery, the family business where Rié worked, was among the few shops still open. The contrast between the redeveloped center’s former vitality and the shuttered storefronts makes the economic past a measure of change, not a promise of lasting prosperity.
