Alpha and Luna succession

A Werewolf Thing: A Rejected Mate Werewolf Romance

Alpha and Luna succession is the status through which Ashton Smith becomes the future alpha of his pack and Saphira Richards is publicly designated as his future Luna. The succession does more than identify the next officeholder: it converts a private mate relationship into a visible political arrangement, makes Saphira responsible for a pack alongside Ashton, and presents their shared rule as dependent on both inheritance and public acknowledgment.

Public Designation and Political Meaning

At a pack meeting, alpha David announces that Saphira is Ashton’s mate and the pack’s new Luna. The declaration is met with cheers and whistles, and David further specifies that when Ashton becomes alpha at the next full moon, Saphira will join him as Luna. The announcement therefore establishes succession before the formal ceremony itself, giving the community a spoken framework for the future transfer of authority.

The wording also binds personal identity to institutional office. Saphira is not presented merely as Ashton’s companion; she is named as the person who will stand beside the future alpha and share the position that follows from his rule. The crowd’s response supplies collective validation, turning the designation into a social fact rather than a private expectation. The pack’s celebration contrasts with the uncertainty surrounding Ashton’s conduct, since the announcement occurs while Saphira notices the strong smell of alcohol on him and questions whether he has been drinking.

Conditions Behind the Succession

Ashton’s claim to leadership is connected to his status as the alpha’s son. The narrative identifies him as a rebellious alpha’s son whose life is marked by partying, getting high, and frequent new girlfriends. That background complicates the orderly image of succession: the future office is ceremonially secure even while the heir’s personal behavior raises questions about his readiness to lead.

Saphira’s position is equally shaped by complicated lineage. She and her twin brother Trevor are half werewolf and half witch, and their mother had been the leader of the witches before her sister took over after the mother’s death. Their mixed heritage places Saphira outside a simple single-group identity, while her expected role as Luna places that hybrid background inside the werewolf pack’s governing structure. Her succession thus carries both inheritance and boundary-crossing implications.

The family’s ritual obligations reinforce this connection between bloodline and authority. Saphira and Trevor are summoned by their grandfather to perform the færy ritual; he explains that they were supposed to lead the Færy Clan when they reached eighteen, but that circumstances changed after their mother left them. This parallel leadership expectation shows that Saphira’s future is governed by more than one succession system. She is at once connected to werewolf leadership through Ashton and to a separate ritual inheritance through her maternal family.

Ceremony and Assumption of Responsibility

The formal Luna and alpha ceremony takes place after Saphira and Ashton have been home for five days. Saphira admits that she is more nervous than expected because she will become Luna and will be responsible for a pack. Her anxiety defines the office as an active burden of governance rather than a decorative title. At the same time, she takes comfort in the fact that she will not perform the task alone, identifying shared rule with Ashton as the condition that makes the responsibility manageable.

David opens the ceremony by proclaiming that the pack will have a new alpha and Luna. He then names Ashton Smith as the person who will become alpha and Saphira Richards as the mate who will join him as Luna. Again, the crowd answers with loud cheers and wolf whistles, making the succession a communal spectacle. Trevor watches from the gathering, smiles broadly, and gives Saphira two thumbs up; she silently thanks him, linking the public transfer of power to private family support.

The ceremony is also an emotional test for Saphira. When she meets Ashton’s eyes, she concludes that she will be all right because his presence gives her confidence that she can be a good Luna. Her confidence is therefore relational rather than solitary: she imagines leadership as something enacted beside her mate. The scene ends with her recognition that she is unconditionally and dangerously in love with Ashton Smith, fusing the language of political succession with the language of romantic commitment.

Mate Bond, Rejection, and Restoration

The succession status cannot be separated from the instability of Ashton and Saphira’s mate bond. Earlier, Ashton rejects Saphira, telling her that he does not love her and never will, then leaving her alone in the school library. Saphira’s twin Trevor can sense her distress through their twin bond, which allows him to recognize that she is lying when she claims that nothing is wrong. Her rejection therefore becomes both an intimate wound and a family experience, because physical pain and emotional suffering are repeatedly connected through the twins’ unusual bond.

The possibility of succession emerges despite that rupture. Ashton later asks Saphira to undergo the full moon ritual, the required rite by which a mate accepts the mate previously rejected. The ritual must occur at the closest full moon after the rejection, when the rejecting mate marks the other at the moon’s highest point, thereby restoring the mate bond. Saphira agrees because she wants their bond restored. This rule gives the relationship a formal mechanism of repair, but it also shows that the future leadership partnership depends on the restoration of a connection that Ashton himself had broken.

Their domestic interactions briefly place the political future in an ordinary setting. After Saphira tells Ashton about Trevor’s actions, Ashton offers to let her stay for the night because it is Saturday and she may not want to see Trevor. She accepts and settles beside him. Later, after a fight with Ashton, Saphira leaves and returns to Trevor, announcing that she will take a shower; Trevor jokes that she smells, and she responds with an eye roll and an involuntary smile. These scenes keep succession from becoming purely ceremonial: the future Luna remains embedded in arguments, family tension, reconciliation, and the fragile everyday life of the couple expected to govern.

Crisis, Inheritance, and Narrative Significance

The succession occurs in a world organized by sharp species boundaries and impending conflict. Banshees are described as natural foes of Saphira’s kind, and their screams can reach a pitch capable of killing those exposed for too long. Saphira and Trevor nevertheless risk themselves to rescue their cousin Sondra, because Saphira insists that family cannot be left behind. Her conduct supplies an early model for the protective loyalty expected from a leader: kinship creates an obligation that overrides personal safety.

Cross-species mate bonds further unsettle the social order surrounding succession. When Simon arrives with a girl, Saphira recognizes from her scent that the girl is a vampire and takes a protective stance. Simon responds protectively toward the vampire, revealing that she is his mate. The scene places a cross-species relationship inside a world of natural enemies, just as Saphira’s mixed werewolf-witch heritage complicates the boundaries of inherited authority.

The larger prophecy gives the succession stakes beyond one pack. It predicts a war between vampires and werewolves on the night when the sun is black and stars cross the sky, with the conflict deciding which species will become dominant. It also states that two hybrids of the same origin will lead the winning side. Against this background, Saphira’s mixed identity and her position beside Ashton become potentially consequential to the future of the supernatural world, even though the immediate succession ceremony concerns one werewolf pack.

The status of Alpha and Luna succession consequently operates on several levels at once. It is an inheritance attached to Ashton’s position as the alpha’s son, a public declaration made by David, a ceremony witnessed and celebrated by the pack, and a personal partnership Saphira must learn to inhabit. It also exposes the tension between institutional confidence and personal instability: the community can proclaim a future alpha and Luna while Ashton struggles with alcohol and drug use, while Saphira carries grief and divided lineage, and while their mate bond requires ritual restoration. The succession’s decisive meaning lies in this demand that private love, family history, bodily lineage, and collective rule be made to function as one leadership identity.
