Emma’s exercise book

A Woman of Substance

Emma’s exercise book is a tattered old schoolbook repurposed as a personal archive of useful knowledge. As Emma prepares for the possibility of making her future in Leeds, she fills it with practical instructions and observations, treating information itself as part of her preparation for independence.

Identity and Contents

The book is more than a recipe collection. Its pages hold menus for different kinds of meals, innumerable recipes, household hints, sewing instructions, and Emma’s own small sketches for dresses and hats. It also preserves some of Adele Fairley’s special beauty advice. The range of entries brings domestic skills, clothing, appearance, and design together in one working record.

How Emma Builds the Archive

Olivia Wainright’s arrival makes meals at Fairley more elaborate than usual. Emma helps Mrs Turner with the cooking and learns from Olivia, who writes out explicit directions for unfamiliar dishes and often comes to the kitchen to supervise. Emma keeps the menus and instructions and pastes them into the schoolbook rather than trusting herself to remember them.

At the dinner preparations, she adds another kind of information to the collection. While sewing a dress hem, she reminds herself to record the name of the unusual tea, Lapsang Souchong, and the wines selected for the meal. She has also learned the serving conventions: red wine with meat, white wine with fish, and champagne with dessert. The book therefore gathers not only recipes but details of service and dining that Emma considers worth retaining.

Preparation for Leeds

Emma does not know what information she may need when she puts her Plan with a capital P into operation in Leeds, so she aims to be prepared in every way. The book’s contents reflect that uncertainty: it combines immediately usable domestic instructions with designs and advice that may serve future needs. Its value lies in this purposeful accumulation. Emma preserves knowledge before she knows exactly how she will use it, making the schoolbook a tangible expression of her forward planning.
