Selection of Matthias
Acts of the ApostlesSelection of Matthias is the appointment that restores the Twelve after Judas’s death left the apostolic community incomplete. By presenting two candidates who had accompanied Jesus throughout his ministry and witnessed the resurrection, and then discerning God’s choice through casting lots, the congregation reconstitutes a body whose number signifies the completeness of the Realm community and whose witness carries forward the mission of Israel.
Background and Significance of the Twelve
In Luke’s Gospel, as in the other Gospels, Jesus gathers twelve close followers, and Luke reserves the term “apostles” for them. The number recalls the twelve tribes of Israel, whose covenantal life was to be a light for other peoples. The apostles therefore signify more than a count of leaders: they represent the community as God intends it and the church’s continuation of Israel’s mission as the community of the Realm.
The Twelve also function as an authoritative body in Acts. Jesus models the role for them, and they in turn model it for the church. Luke uses their presence to authorize, or partly authorize, significant developments in the church’s witness. After Judas’s death reduced the active apostles to eleven, restoring the number mattered because the group was meant to represent the community’s completeness.
Candidates and Selection
The account sets out a qualification for the apostolic role: a candidate must have been with Jesus throughout Jesus’s ministry and be a witness to the resurrection. The congregation puts forward two men who meet this criterion, Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. The decision thus begins with communal discernment among candidates linked to the whole span of Jesus’s ministry, rather than with an appointment made without stated qualifications.
Matthias is chosen by casting lots. The narrative’s interpretation of this procedure is decisive: ancient people did not understand lots as chance or luck, but as a medium through which God disclosed a choice. The outcome is consequently presented not as a random result, but as God selecting Matthias to complete the apostolic circle.
Restoration and Continuing Witness
The selection follows the account of Judas’s death, which had disrupted the Twelve and left their representative community incomplete. With Matthias chosen, the number is restored. The episode therefore turns loss into institutional and symbolic repair: the community can continue its witness with the full body that, in Luke’s account, represents completeness in the Realm.
A parallel with Luke’s account of the travelers on the road to Emmaus sharpens this movement from disruption toward witness. There, disheartened disciples encounter the risen Jesus and join other disciples in witness; in Acts, Judas’s death exemplifies resistance to the Realm, while the selection of Matthias restores the Twelve so their witness can continue. The contrast places the appointment within a larger narrative of the community’s response to loss: its continuity depends not on leaving the rupture untouched, but on reconstituting the body charged with witness.
Community and Discernment
The account also invites reflection on who must be included for a church to represent the Realm adequately. The suggestion that an incomplete circle raises the question of who is missing from the church is offered as a contemporary interpretive extension, not as a claim that Luke explicitly made that application. It draws on the episode’s emphasis that communal completeness matters to the church’s witness.
The casting of lots can likewise be set beside the democratic procedures through which many contemporary congregations elect officers and decide directions, expenditures, and other major matters. Neither procedure makes discernment effortless: the account presents lots as a means of discerning God’s choice, while a vote cannot simply be assumed to express God’s purposes. The episode thus keeps the question of communal authority joined to the community’s responsibility to seek a form of life and witness faithful to the Realm.
