The Twenty-Ninth Chapter of Acts

Acts of the Apostles

The Twenty-Ninth Chapter of Acts is a sermon image that turns the ending of Luke-Acts outward: although the book has only twenty-eight chapters, its story is meant to continue in the life and witness of later congregations. The image makes the congregation, rather than the sermon itself, the author of the next chapter, called to bear witness to the presence and coming of the Realm while awaiting Jesus’ return.

The Sermon’s Provocation

A preacher once announced a sermon titled “The Twenty-Ninth Chapter of Acts.” The congregation grew restive because it knew that Acts contains only twenty-eight chapters. That discrepancy was the point: the title asks listeners to imagine a continuation beyond the written book, not to mistake the sermon for a missing chapter.

The image shifts attention from counting chapters to carrying a story forward. Luke’s account of Jesus, the apostles, and the church supplies the earlier chapters; the congregation’s present life and witness give the story its next movement.

Who Writes the Next Chapter

The sermon itself is not the Twenty-Ninth Chapter of Acts. The congregation writes it through the way it lives and bears witness. This distinction assigns the continuation to a community, rather than to a preacher’s words or a new addition to the biblical book.

The congregation’s task is to witness faithfully to the presence and coming of the Realm. Its chapter belongs to the movement begun in Luke-Acts, and the call is to continue in the line of Jesus, the apostles, and Paul.

An Unfinished Story

The saga begun in Luke-Acts will not be complete until Jesus returns. The interval before that return is therefore neither an epilogue detached from the biblical story nor its final resolution: it is the time in which congregations continue to act within the story as they await its completion.

The image leaves readers with a question about their own communal witness: how will they write their chapter in the movement toward the Realm, and will they continue faithfully in that line while awaiting the end of this age? The Twenty-Ninth Chapter is thus both an interpretation of Luke-Acts’ open-ended future and a summons to take part in it.
