Tessa Young and Zed

After We Collided

Tessa Young and Zed occupy an uncertain space between friendship and romance: Zed imagines a life they might have shared, while Tessa’s feelings for Hardin prevent her from choosing that possibility. Their connection is tested by the earlier bet, a kiss after Tessa and Hardin separate, and an explicit agreement not to rush toward a relationship. The result is not a settled romance but a fragile arrangement in which affection and hope coexist with unresolved attachment.

An alternative shaped by an unresolved past

Tessa’s bond with Zed becomes newly charged during her separation from Hardin, but it does not begin on equal emotional terms. Zed has imagined being with her; Tessa, by contrast, remains deeply attached to Hardin and is still trying to understand what the breakup means. Even after deciding that she cannot keep repeating the same cycle with Hardin, she recognizes how difficult a life without him feels. Her willingness to consider time with Zed therefore cannot be read as proof that she has moved on.

The earlier bet gives Zed’s hopes a particular complication. As he later explains, in the alternative he imagines, he would have told Tessa about the bet before it went any further. He pictures asking her on ordinary dates, treating her honestly, and refusing to share private details with the people involved. He believes that, without the deception and humiliation, she might eventually have fallen in love with him. His imagined future is a counterfactual account, not a life the two actually shared, but it reveals how much he has considered the possibility and how centrally honesty figures in his version of it.

Small gestures and guarded contact

Before their more direct conversation, Tessa’s attention turns toward Zed during the unsettled period after her breakup. On her way back from a coffeehouse, she passes the environmental studies building and wonders whether he is inside. Although she does not know his schedule, she goes in rather than continuing to speculate. The choice is modest, but it shows her beginning to seek his company while still uncertain about what that closeness should mean.

At another point, Zed brings Tessa home. She thanks him and gently asks him to leave, explaining that Landon is there and that she will spend the night at Landon’s parents’ home. The exchange sets a limit without denying Zed’s kindness: she accepts his help, but does not invite the moment to become a declaration of intimacy. This guardedness is consistent with her position elsewhere. She can care about Zed and still reserve the right to step back.

The imagined future and the kiss

After lunch at a modest strip mall, as they head back toward Zed’s place, Tessa asks what he thinks would have happened if he had won the bet. His answer turns the question from speculation about the contest into an account of the relationship he wished they might have had. He says he would have disclosed the bet before anything happened, then imagines taking her on proper dates and making her happy without exploiting her or mocking her behind her back. He also imagines putting her above his reputation and distancing himself from the people involved. These are his hopes about an unrealized alternative, not evidence that they became a couple.

Tessa responds by kissing him, but the physical gesture does not settle what either of them wants. When Zed stops and asks what the kiss means, Tessa cannot give him an answer; he cannot define it either. The pause matters: attraction is present, yet neither treats the kiss as a commitment. Zed recognizes that Tessa still loves Hardin, and she confirms that the separation has lasted only nine days. Her own account of her feelings makes clear that love for Hardin remains powerful, even as she wishes their relationship could be different.

Boundaries, hope, and an open ending

Zed does not demand that Tessa become ready for him. He says he does not want to be a rebound and acknowledges that she is not prepared to begin a relationship with him. He nevertheless asks her to try to allow herself the possibility of being happy, and leaves open the hope that she might someday feel differently. His appeal places a boundary beside his desire: he wants a chance, but not at the cost of pretending her attachment to Hardin has ended.

They agree not to push the relationship forward. Instead, they will spend time together and see what develops; Zed will not pressure her to move on, and Tessa accepts that she needs more time before considering dating. She also has practical matters to resolve, including finding somewhere to live. The arrangement gives their connection room to continue while making its limits explicit. Tessa and Zed’s relationship thus remains unresolved: Zed’s romantic hopes are clear, Tessa’s affection is real but uncertain, and her continuing love for Hardin prevents their closeness from becoming a defined partnership.
