Hardin's WCU Disciplinary Hearing

After We Fell

Hardin's WCU Disciplinary Hearing brings the consequences of Hardin's conduct before the university and exposes the limits of the support his family can offer: Ken tries to intervene, but Tessa is excluded from the room, and Hardin's own account of the punishment shifts from expulsion to a fine and academic probation.

Before the Hearing

As the group walks toward the administrative building, Ken tells Hardin he hopes the proceeding will be brief. He has been calling everyone he can to pull strings and says he is praying for the best. Ken then asks to do the talking inside, waiting for Hardin's agreement. Hardin accepts without argument, allowing his father to take the lead at the threshold of the hearing.

Tessa Is Turned Away

Ken opens the building's large wooden doors, but tells Tessa she cannot enter the room because it is for family only. He acknowledges that she might be allowed in as a witness, but says that would create a serious conflict of interest. His sympathetic manner does not soften the exclusion for Hardin: he immediately panics and insists that he needs Tessa inside. The rules separate her from the proceedings even as Hardin makes clear that he wants her presence there.

The Penalty and Its Changing Description

Afterward, Hardin lies on his back, staring at the ceiling, and tells Tessa, "I got expelled. Just in case you were wondering." The blunt announcement initially presents the hearing as ending in the most severe possible academic consequence. Later, however, he describes the university's action differently: he says he received a fine and academic probation, adding that the slightest further mistake would mean he was done. The difference between his first declaration and his later account is left unresolved, but the later explanation makes clear that his place at WCU remains precarious rather than secure.

Significance

The hearing is structured around competing forms of advocacy and authority. Ken's attempt to pull strings and speak for Hardin meets an institutional boundary that also keeps Tessa outside; Hardin, meanwhile, moves from asking for her presence to announcing the result in stark terms. His later description of probation turns the punishment into an ongoing threat: one more misstep could end his academic career, a pressure that surfaces when he refuses to hear the word Seattle and says he has a headache after a long day.
