Richard's drug problem and debt are revealed to Tessa

After We Fell

Chad’s visit to Tessa and Hardin’s Apartment turns Richard’s hidden drug problem and debt into a crisis Tessa can no longer avoid. The scene makes the truth visible first through an object: the watch Ken gave Hardin is hanging from Chad’s wrist. Only after Tessa notices it does Hardin admit that he handed it over to pay what Richard owed, and then disclose that the debt was for drugs rather than alcohol.

The Unexpected Visitor

A knock interrupts Tessa’s explanation while Landon is there. Hardin gets to the door before Landon can answer, insisting on handling it himself. He does not check the peephole; when he opens the door, he immediately regrets not doing so. Chad is waiting outside and asks where Richard is. Hardin steps into the hallway and shuts the apartment door behind him, seeking to keep Tessa away from the encounter.

Chad’s appearance makes the danger feel immediate. Hardin notices his stained teeth and matted facial hair, and sees the expensive watch on his wrist. Chad calls Richard his buddy, but Hardin knows he has drugs on him and treats him as both a threat and a creditor. He refuses to let Richard come out or to give Chad anything, then threatens to smash Chad’s face against the hallway railing and call the police on him for possession and trespassing. The threat is matter-of-fact, but Hardin’s warning that Chad should not test his patience makes plain how close the encounter is to violence.

The Watch Exposes the Debt

Tessa comes into the hallway to ask what is happening. Hardin instinctively pulls her back and tries to dismiss Chad as someone who is leaving. But Tessa sees the object dangling from Chad’s wrist and recognizes it as Hardin’s watch. Her attention immediately shifts from Chad to Hardin: she asks whether he has been spending time with the man. Hardin starts to deny knowing anything, but she has already understood that the matching watch is no coincidence. She crosses her arms and moves away from him, turning a concealed arrangement into a breach of trust between them.

Tessa insists that she needs to know what is happening and calls for Landon, believing he will tell her what Hardin has withheld. Hardin looks toward Richard, aware that Landon will not lie to Tessa as he has. He then admits that Richard owed Chad money and that he gave Chad the watch as payment. The disclosure makes Hardin an active participant in managing Richard’s debt: rather than merely knowing Richard was in trouble, he had surrendered a gift from Ken to settle what was owed.

Tessa’s first outrage is directed at the watch. She objects that it was a gift from Hardin’s father and that it is unfair for Richard’s bar tab to have cost Hardin something so personal. Her response shows what she thinks the debt means: Richard has been drinking, as he has before, and the watch has been lost to the consequences. Hardin sees that she is more focused on the stolen value of the gift than on the fact that her father owed Chad money, but he does not let her explanation stand.

The Drug Revelation

As Hardin coaxes Tessa toward the elevator, she continues to protest that Richard should not have taken the watch over a bar tab and asks how much someone would have to drink to owe that kind of money. Hardin tells her it was not alcohol. Tessa turns her face away and tells him not to make excuses for her father’s drinking. Her agitation rises; she demands that he tell her what is going on.

Hardin’s disclosure is blunt: Richard’s debt is connected to drugs. He frames the admission against his own sense of helplessness, feeling that he could not shield Tessa from her father’s failings any more than he could shield his mother from his own father’s devastation. Instead of softening the truth or continuing to conceal it, he chooses to be brutally honest. The decision comes after he has tried to control who sees Chad and what Tessa hears, so the honesty arrives alongside evidence of the secrecy that made it necessary.

Tessa initially appears not to react. Then she shakes her head and denies that Richard is using drugs. She steps into the elevator, presses the button for their floor, and stares into space as the doors close. Hardin follows her inside. The scene ends not with acceptance or resolution but with Tessa enclosed with the information she cannot yet believe.

Consequences and Narrative Significance

The revelation changes the meaning of the watch. It first seems to be a valuable possession taken in payment for Richard’s familiar drinking; Hardin’s admission recasts it as collateral surrendered because of a drug debt. The object links a family gift from Ken to Richard’s concealed crisis, while its appearance on Chad’s wrist supplies Tessa with concrete evidence before Hardin gives her the explanation.

The scene also exposes the limits of Hardin’s protective approach. He separates Tessa from Chad and tries to manage the encounter himself, but his physical intervention and attempted denial cannot keep her from recognizing the watch. His eventual disclosure breaks the immediate secrecy without resolving Richard’s problem or Tessa’s disbelief. The movement from hallway confrontation to elevator silence leaves the central consequence suspended: Tessa now knows what the debt was for, but has not accepted what that means about her father.
