Tessa Young—Steph

After We Fell

Tessa Young—Steph is a friendship fractured by betrayal. In the aftermath of the Dan incident, Tessa is hurt not only by what Steph did but by the collapse of her belief that she had given Steph no reason to harm her; later, learning that Steph had also impersonated someone in messages deepens the breach rather than resolving it.

Betrayal and Tessa’s hurt

Tessa describes herself as having done nothing to hurt Steph or the others in their circle, and her distress is sharpened by that sense of unfairness. The betrayal is especially difficult to absorb because Steph had belonged to the social group Tessa thought she knew. In Hardin’s account, Molly had contacted him after the Applebee’s incident, but he initially misread Steph’s behavior as nosy meddling rather than recognizing how serious it was. His admission that he had underestimated her makes the gap between suspicion and knowledge part of the relationship’s damage.

Deception and the aftermath

Later, while speaking with Zed in Seattle, Tessa apologizes for accusing him of sending messages from Hardin’s phone. She explains that Steph admitted she had been responsible for those messages during the Dan incident. This disclosure gives Tessa a specific answer to one source of mistrust, but it does not repair her friendship with Steph. Tessa still reacts to the incident with a shiver, and her apology is directed to Zed, not to Steph.

A broken friendship

Tessa’s attempt to distinguish Zed from the people who hurt her shows how the betrayal has unsettled her sense of the wider friend group. When she accidentally includes him among them, she immediately clarifies and apologizes; Zed, in turn, says the group is no longer much of a group. The exchange places Steph’s breach within a broader social fracture, while leaving the central relationship unresolved: the evidence records Tessa’s hurt and the later clarification, but no renewed contact or reconciliation between Tessa and Steph.
