The Conflict at Dizzy’s Bar

After We Fell

The Conflict at Dizzy’s Bar is a violent encounter in which Hardin steps in after an unnamed man grabs Richard, Tessa’s father, by the collar. Hardin’s intervention leaves the other man sitting with ice against his cheek and Hardin’s hands swelling; it also brings Tessa face to face with the risks of Hardin drinking alongside her father. The episode binds protection and aggression together, while Tessa’s response makes clear that good intentions do not erase the danger or strain of the behavior.

Causes and Background

After giving Richard a ride, Hardin accepts his invitation to go inside the small bar. He recognizes the poor judgment in drinking with Tessa’s homeless, alcoholic father, but goes in anyway, reasoning that he has nowhere else to be. His decision is therefore presented not as a planned attempt to help Richard but as an impulsive choice made despite his own misgivings.

That choice places Hardin in the bar when an unnamed man grabs Richard by the collar and roughly yanks him upright. The account establishes this physical provocation immediately before the next chapter shifts to Tessa’s perspective. It does not provide the man’s identity or a fuller account of what preceded the grab, so the confrontation’s stated trigger remains the threat to Richard.

The Confrontation

Hardin responds with violence. By the time Tessa enters, Richard is jubilant and tells her that Hardin has beaten the man badly. Hardin emerges from the bathroom wiping his bloody hands on a paper towel stained red. The scene’s aftermath makes the cost of the intervention visible: the man is on the floor holding a bag of ice to his cheek, and Hardin’s hands are already swelling.

Hardin defends what he did as having Richard’s back, arguing that Richard would otherwise have ended up on the floor. Richard, in turn, defends Hardin to Tessa by saying that he loves her. The two men’s accounts give the violence a protective frame, but neither changes what Tessa sees: her father is drunk, Hardin is injured from the fight, and another man has been hurt.

Tessa’s Response and Aftermath

Tessa does not thank Hardin. She rebukes him for being drunk in the middle of the afternoon, particularly while with her father, and leaves him to return to Richard at the bar. The woman behind the counter then tells her to get the men out. Tessa agrees to take them to her house for the night so they can sober up, but explicitly tells both that their behavior is unacceptable.

Outside, Hardin scowls as Richard tries to rest an arm on his shoulder, and Tessa gets into her car disgusted. The gesture complicates the apparent alliance formed in the bar: Hardin has intervened on Richard’s behalf, yet he is still irritated by the older man’s drunken closeness. Tessa’s decision to bring them home is practical and limited; it is not approval of either man’s conduct.

Significance

The episode turns Hardin’s protective impulse into a relationship problem rather than a simple act of rescue. Tessa knows how he behaves when drunk and says she has rarely seen him this intoxicated, not even on the night he destroyed the china. Her recollection links the bar fight to an established pattern of drinking and destructive behavior, making the swollen hands and the injured man signs of a larger concern rather than an isolated spectacle.

For Tessa, the immediate issue is not only that Hardin has fought someone but that he has chosen to drink with her father while doing so. She regards the drinking as further fuel for the problems already facing them. The conflict consequently ends without a resolution: Hardin has defended Richard, but Tessa leaves the scene more uneasy about Hardin’s intoxication and the consequences it can bring.
