An Unusual Liaison

An Unusual Liaison
A role outside the cockpit
Matthew Magruder travels ashore as a media liaison, an assignment requested because Pamela Drake is expected to cover the Crimean transfer. He is uncomfortable with diplomacy but accepts the task as part of the carrier group's work.
A mixed party lands
Navy personnel, Marines, and staff arrive in a Russian-controlled city where the surrender's terms remain unsettled. Their limited security and uncertain welcome make the supposedly ceremonial visit feel exposed from the start.
The Ceremony Turns Violent

The Ceremony Turns Violent
Magruder acts
When armed men approach the stage, Magruder recognizes the danger before the crowd can react. He tackles Boychenko and helps stop an attacker at close range, protecting the general during a burst of gunfire.
Leadership becomes immediate
Admiral Tarrant and Captain Whitehead are among the casualties, leaving Magruder to confront medical needs, frightened personnel, and a collapsing chain of command. The media-liaison assignment is over; keeping people safe now matters more.
The Helicopter Is Lost

The Helicopter Is Lost
The expected exit closes
Russian aircraft strafe the White Palace grounds and destroy the waiting Navy helicopter. Boychenko confirms that he did not order the attack, while Magruder realizes that ordinary evacuation is no longer available.
A stranded party assembles
Magruder gathers Americans, UN personnel, and civilians as the fighting spreads. He establishes communications through a news crew's satellite equipment because normal military contact from the ground is unavailable.
Command Under Fire

Command Under Fire
A provisional chain
Magruder organizes the stranded party, relying on Chief Geiger to keep personnel together and on Natalie Kardesh to translate. Joyce Flynn takes over media work, freeing him to handle military decisions and communications.
Washington remains distant
Through the improvised link, he learns that the carrier group is under attack and fuel-constrained. The party cannot assume that orders or rescue will arrive quickly, so Magruder and Will Grant begin planning for what follows if they are left on their own.
A New Kind of Combatant

A New Kind of Combatant
An improvised ground role
Magruder reaches Arsincevo with Boychenko's retreating force and discovers that the people around him must survive as infantry, not merely wait for extraction. He takes up a rifle while working to coordinate with aircraft above.
Responsibility remains personal
The battle places him between a struggling Russian force and the Americans attempting to help it. His authority comes less from formal command than from his willingness to organize, communicate, and stay with the group.
