1981

All Creatures Great and Small

1981 marks the point at which Wight declared he intended to end his writing life, linking that decision to the publication of The Lord God Made Them All. The date reads as a planned conclusion rather than a final one: he eventually published another volume, Every Living Thing, in 1992.

The Intended Conclusion

By 1981, Wight had spent the preceding decade publishing collections as James Herriot in England, while American editions paired volumes under omnibus titles, including All Things Bright and Beautiful and All Things Wise and Wonderful. After The Lord God Made Them All appeared, he stated that he planned to retire from writing. The announcement gave the book the significance of a proposed endpoint in a career that had begun comparatively late.

A Later Return

The intention did not prove permanent. Wight released Every Living Thing in 1992, eleven years after the planned retirement, making it his final volume. The interval distinguishes the decision announced in 1981 from the eventual end of his publishing career: 1981 was a declared stopping point, not the last date on which he wrote or published.
