The Drovers

All Creatures Great and Small

The Drovers is a pub in Darrowby whose brief appearances connect it with Tristan Farnon’s efforts to recover his composure after demanding animal cases. In two episodes, a visit there marks a transition from strain to sociability: first after a night caring for a howling dog, and later after Tristan has struggled with a pig in a sty.

A Night During the Labrador Vigil

While Tristan was keeping watch over a howling dog, he slipped over to The Drovers and returned with a crate of pint Magnets. He told James Herriot that after three or four drinks the dog had stopped worrying him; Tristan had spent hours howling back at it. When Herriot saw the dog, its howling had ceased, recognition had returned to its eyes, and its tail made an attempt at a wag. The visit belongs to the episode’s comic turn: the exhausting vigil gives way to an unlikely contest of noise, followed by the dog’s recovery.

After the Pigsty

The Drovers appears again after Tristan’s encounter with a pig. Later that evening, Herriot found him there drinking his third pint. Tristan had changed out of the state in which he left the sty: he was clean and hardly smelled at all, and the old light was returning to his eye. Herriot ordered himself a second half and Tristan a fourth pint, then asked what had happened. Over his drink, Tristan began recounting the operation, starting with his lonely position outside the sty in the dark.

Narrative Role

In these scenes, The Drovers is defined less by description of its premises than by what happens around a visit: beer, resumed conversation, and a shift away from the immediate discomfort of animal work. The first episode associates the pub with Tristan’s unconventional coping during a long vigil; the second makes it the setting for Herriot to prompt and hear his account of a difficult job. Its recurring function is modest but distinct: it gives the narrative a social interval in which the consequences and absurdities of veterinary work can be shared.
