Regret as a Starting Point

Regret as a Starting Point
A past that feels settled
Auden believes that she missed key parts of childhood and high school, while Eli feels that Abe's death has ended the life he once had. Both are drawn to questions about what might have gone differently.
A choice in the present
Their conversations shift attention from impossible alternatives to opportunities still available. The past cannot be replaced, but the next decision has not yet been made.
Small Do-Overs

Small Do-Overs
Trying what was missed
Auden goes bowling, visits a club, joins a food fight, and delivers newspapers. These experiences happen late and out of order, but they are real because she takes part in them.
No perfect correction
The activities do not create an ideal childhood or erase Auden's earlier loneliness. They give her a way to act now rather than treating missed chances as proof that the future is closed.
A Wrong Turn With Eli

A Wrong Turn With Eli
Fear interrupts closeness
Auden withdraws from Eli and throws herself into study after family conflict brings old pain back. She calls herself behind and says she must get serious.
A missed chance becomes visible
Eli refuses to finish her explanation for her and walks away. Auden realizes that her own retreat has made a new loss possible.
Another Attempt at the Prom

Another Attempt at the Prom
Old disappointment revisited
Jason cancels on Auden again, this time for a conference opportunity. Instead of interpreting the cancellation as a challenge to prove herself, Auden recognizes that she is not truly invested in reviving their almost-relationship.
Choosing her own route
Auden buys a bicycle and later asks Eli to go to the prom. His refusal hurts, but it forces her to act for herself rather than waiting for a conventional second chance.
The Third Try

The Third Try
Returning to the risk
After learning to ride, Auden chooses the bicycle instead of a car and jumps a curb while approaching Eli. The imperfect maneuver turns practice into an independent act.
A chance taken together
Eli explains why he refused the invitation and reveals that he has finished his final competition. They meet again not because nothing went wrong, but because both are willing to try after it did.
