Jump park clearing

Along for the Ride

Jump park clearing is the open practice spot where Auden confronts how little she knows about riding a bicycle. After repeated falls there, she returns with Maggie for morning lessons, making the clearing a setting for slow progress through patience and repetition.

Setting and First Lesson

Bright and early the morning after an earlier attempt, Auden and Maggie meet at the clearing by the jump park. Auden expects that riding might come back to her, but each time she gets moving she panics, wobbles, and falls. With Maggie holding the back of the seat, she manages about forty yards before veering into bushes when Maggie lets go. Auden has already wanted to quit for more than an hour; picking herself up and brushing sand and gravel from her knees feels humiliating, especially beside Maggie’s persistent thumbs-up encouragement.

A Place of Repeated Practice

The clearing becomes the destination for a week of nearly daily morning practice. Auden first pedals while Maggie holds the seat, following Adam’s advice; gradually, Maggie lets go for short stretches while running behind her. Auden works on balance and pedaling, and the practice remains imperfect: she has more wipeouts and scabs on both knees. But by the end of the week, she is doing much better than on that first morning. The routine—picking up two coffees at Beach Beans before meeting Maggie—gives the clearing a recurring place in Auden’s changing days, as she shifts toward early-morning activity and tries again at something she had assumed she could do.
