Ray’s
Along for the RideRay’s is a diner whose meaning for Auden changes from refuge to chosen meeting place. In the closing scene, she finds Eli studying at their favorite table and settles in beside him, making the late-night diner a setting for shared effort and intimacy.
Setting and Welcome
Ray’s is brightly lit, with shiny tables and friendly waitresses. Auden contrasts it with The Washroom: Ray’s is not the same kind of place, but customers can sit as long as they want. That unhurried welcome matters most when it is late and other options have run out.
Auden first discovered Ray’s under those circumstances, when she had nowhere else to go. By the time she returns in the closing scene, she has plenty of alternatives. The diner has not changed its basic welcome; what has changed is why she comes.
A Place for Study
Auden reaches Ray’s after driving for two hours. It is already dark when she parks, cuts the engine, and pauses to look through the windows at the bright interior. Inside, she finds Eli at table four, the corner table by the window that the two of them favor.
Eli has a mug in his hand, a half-eaten slice of pie beside him, and a textbook open in front of him. He is taking an unusually heavy course load at the U to make up for a year he missed. Returning to school has been difficult and frightening at first; Auden, familiar with the pressures of academic work, helps him with papers and tests, one at a time. Ray’s thus accommodates not only solitary study but the ongoing support Auden offers Eli.
The Closing Scene
Auden bends to kiss Eli’s forehead. He looks up and smiles; she slides into the seat opposite him as a waitress fills the mug beside her. When she lifts it, the mug is warm in her hands, and Eli rests a hand on her knee. The scene brings together the diner’s ordinary comforts and the closeness of their relationship without turning the moment into a grand declaration.
Morning will arrive soon, as it always does, but the scene closes on the time they still have together. Ray’s has become more than a place to wait out a difficult night: it is a familiar meeting point where Eli can work and Auden can be with him.
