Wallace

Along for the Ride

Wallace is a local presence whose apartment becomes a gathering place for Auden and her friends, and whose casual access to neighborhood news makes him a source of information about Jake Stock and Belissa Norwood. The scenes sketch him through his beachside home, his social circle, and a revealing piece of gossip that he has overheard at the bike shop.

Residence and Setting

Wallace’s apartment occupies the lower level of a green house two streets back from the beach. The yard is mostly dirt, broken by a few clumps of grass, and a washing machine stands on the side porch. Above the garage hangs a sign bearing the name Sentimental Journey, a choice that strikes Auden as noteworthy.

Wallace explains that the landlords chose the name as part of a local custom of giving beach houses such names. The previous place where he lived was called GULL’S CRY. The details locate Wallace within Colby’s informal beachside world, where even a rental house’s name participates in local character and conversation.

Host and Local Social Circle

Wallace sits in a visibly sagging armchair and describes the expected guests at the gathering: people from the shop, locals from the bike park, and a girl who works at Jumbo Smoothie. His list places him among overlapping groups connected to local businesses and riding, rather than presenting the gathering as a closed or formal occasion.

The arrival of Jake Stock changes the atmosphere. Jake enters talking about beer, then stops when he sees Auden and Maggie sitting together on the couch. Wallace is present as a host and observer as the gathering’s social tensions become apparent, though the account does not establish that he causes or resolves them.

Gossip and Jake Stock

Wallace later reports that Belissa Norwood came by the shop to tell Jake she had a new boyfriend, a student from the U who was spending the summer tending bar at the Cadillac. According to Wallace, Belissa wanted Jake to hear the news from her in person rather than from someone else. Wallace interprets the visit as significant because, in his view, she had remained hung up on Jake despite their breakup months earlier.

Jake immediately challenges that framing, pointing out that he and Belissa had been broken up for months. When Leah asks how Wallace knows about the visit, he admits that he was just inside the shop door, checking the air on the display bikes. His account therefore rests on overhearing the exchange, not on being its participant; the scene distinguishes the facts he witnessed from his inference about Belissa’s feelings.
