Emma's computer
AlwaysEmma's computer is an ordinary household device that becomes an important investigative resource after Paige disappears. Because Paige had used it to access her online accounts, Jake and Gillian can search its email and social-network traces; what they find helps connect Paige to Tim Levine in San Diego and moves the search toward the truth behind her absence.
Household Device and Paige’s Access
Emma keeps the computer in her bedroom and mainly uses it for business related to her store and for word processing. Paige also used it when she did not want to start her laptop or when that laptop froze or crashed. The arrangement gives the computer a secondary, less conspicuous role: it is Emma’s machine, but it has also served as a convenient point of access to Paige’s communications.
That shared use matters because Paige took her laptop when she left, and her purse was also missing. The police had suggested that the laptop might have been stolen from Paige’s car while it stood beside the highway, but that possibility did not answer what had happened to her. Emma’s computer offers another place to look, one still available to the people searching for Paige.
Search and Digital Traces
Jake asks whether Paige had a computer, learns that she sometimes used Emma’s, and asks permission to examine it. He hopes to find old emails and gain access to Paige’s social-networking accounts. Emma agrees. She identifies Branches as the site Paige used daily and explains that Paige had given her a password so she could explore the site before deciding whether to join. Emma never got around to doing so; the saved access exists, but she had not made it part of her own online life.
Jake and Gillian work together at the computer for more than an hour. Jake searches while Gillian reads emails in a separate window, and they ask Emma about names and places that appear in what they find. The investigation reveals how much of Paige’s social circle Emma did not know: although Emma thought she knew Paige’s friends, the social-network accounts show connections beyond that familiar set. Jake prints pages for Gillian to sort through, and the printer eventually runs out of paper. The search thus expands from a single computer into a substantial body of material requiring interpretation.
From Online Contact to San Diego
The findings do not immediately resolve the disappearance. Jake had also checked Paige’s phone records; use stopped on the day she disappeared, and he found nothing unusual in the records. He and Gillian instead find posts by Tim Levine. Gillian identifies an initial exchange between Tim and Paige about a year and a half earlier, occasional later posts, and a new flurry about six months before the search. The visible posts are intermittent, but Gillian senses that they communicated in between.
A more direct trace appears in an email from Tim in Paige’s recycle bin. In it, Paige thanks him for being there and says she will call soon. The recovered message, the pattern of posts, and Tim’s location in San Diego give the investigators a concrete lead. Gillian’s impression that Paige and Tim remain closely connected is a psychic reading; Jake’s search for corroborating facts supplies the verifiable detail that Tim lives in the city that had already drawn Gillian’s attention.
Investigative Consequences and Significance
The computer does not itself explain why Paige left, and its contents require Jake and Gillian to distinguish useful leads from the many names and online contacts they uncover. But it changes the search: an investigation initially limited by Paige’s missing laptop and purse can proceed through her use of Emma’s device. The emails and social posts redirect attention toward Tim and San Diego, helping the search move closer to Paige.
Its role also rests on an asymmetry of access. Paige had offered Emma the password and encouraged her to explore Branches, but Emma had not taken the time; after Paige disappears, the account becomes valuable precisely because Emma can authorize Jake to look for traces left behind. The computer’s saved information makes private contact legible to others, while the scattered and incomplete online record still leaves the investigators to infer what happened between visible posts.
The episode gives the device a plot function grounded in its everyday use rather than in any special technology: Paige’s occasional borrowing of Emma’s computer preserves a route to communications that might otherwise have remained inaccessible. Alongside Gillian’s impressions and Jake’s conventional investigation, those digital traces help turn uncertainty into a specific direction. The search ultimately exposes the connection behind Paige’s flight: she ran after sleeping with Emma’s husband, Barrett, and being unable to bear her guilt. Emma’s computer is therefore one step in the investigation that leads from an unexplained disappearance toward the concealed betrayal and, eventually, the sisters’ painful reunion.
