“God does not play dice”

American Prometheus

“God does not play dice” is the expression associated with Albert Einstein’s resistance to the indeterminacy of quantum theory. In the book, it serves not simply as a memorable objection but as a point of tension between Einstein’s convictions and a theory that Oppenheimer regarded as having drawn important inspiration from Einstein’s own work.

The Expression and Its Scientific Context

Einstein defended the good Lord against the suggestion that he continuously rolls the dice, a compact formulation of his criticism of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The principle was one of the foundations of quantum physics; Einstein’s objection centered on its implication that indeterminacy belonged to the account of the physical world. The expression thus gives a theological image to a scientific disagreement: the issue was whether uncertainty was fundamental, not merely whether physicists could yet predict an outcome.

Oppenheimer’s Reading of Einstein

Oppenheimer saw an irony in Einstein’s opposition. In his account, Einstein’s work on relativity had inspired insights developed by Niels Bohr, yet Einstein later fought both Bohr and the quantum theory he had helped father. Oppenheimer characterized that struggle as noble and furious, and connected it to Einstein’s sustained effort to expose inconsistencies in quantum theory. He thought Einstein’s ingenuity in devising challenges was exceptional, but judged that the supposed inconsistencies did not hold up and that their resolution could sometimes be found in Einstein’s earlier work.

Disagreement Without Estrangement

The dispute did not prevent Oppenheimer from enjoying Einstein’s company. Their scientific opinions remained sharply different, and Oppenheimer did not treat Einstein’s maxim as a reason to dismiss him. Instead, the expression marks the divide between Einstein’s resistance to indeterminacy and the quantum outlook shared by the younger physicists around Oppenheimer, while Oppenheimer’s account makes the divide more complex: Einstein was opposing a theory to which his own intellectual legacy had contributed.
