Pacific Union Club

American Prometheus

The Pacific Union Club is presented as an exclusive club within California’s network of powerful business and political figures. Its significance in the account lies less in its activities than in the social access it offered: Ernest Lawrence entered through the connections he had built while securing support for his ambitious accelerator program, while J. Robert Oppenheimer stood outside this world.

Place in the Elite Network

The club enters the narrative after Lawrence had cultivated relationships with influential Berkeley regents and financial backers. In 1932, University of California president Robert G. Sproul sponsored Lawrence for the Bohemian Club, a San Francisco fraternity whose members included prominent businessmen and politicians. The Pacific Union Club was described as an even more exclusive circle, distinct from the Bohemian Club rather than another name for it.

Lawrence’s Entry

John Francis Neylan, a national power broker and William Randolph Hearst’s chief counsel, later secured Lawrence’s admission to the Pacific Union Club. The invitation extended a pattern of access formed through Lawrence’s work: building ever larger cyclotrons required substantial funding, and he proved adept at attracting money from influential men. His ascent into elite social circles accompanied his repeated dealings with these backers; over time, he also came to share their conservative, anti–New Deal politics.

The Contrast with Oppenheimer

The account makes Lawrence’s acceptance a pointed contrast with J. Robert Oppenheimer’s exclusion. The Bohemian Club’s members, it says, would not have thought to welcome Oppenheimer, who was Jewish and considered too otherworldly. Lawrence, a Midwestern farm boy, moved easily into that society and was later admitted to the still more exclusive Pacific Union Club. The contrast locates scientific ambition within a social order shaped by money, influence, and belonging: Lawrence’s institutional and financial reach opened doors that remained closed to Oppenheimer.
