Sock filled with D batteries

American Rust

The Sock filled with D batteries is a makeshift, immediately practical object in Billy Poe’s prison passage: retrieved from the dirt near a fence, it becomes part of Dwayne’s advice for getting through a metal-detector check. Its significance lies in that conversion from concealed bundle to visible explanation.

Discovery and Appearance

After Dwayne walks to the dirt by the fence and kicks at it, Billy Poe picks up something lying there: a sock packed with D-cell batteries. The text gives no account of who put it there or how long it had been hidden. Its ordinary materials and improvised form are concrete; its intended use becomes clear only through what Dwayne tells Billy Poe to do next.

Use at the Detector

Dwayne instructs Billy Poe to take the batteries out of the sock and put them in his pocket. When the detector sounds, he is to show what he has, after which, Dwayne says, he will be allowed to pass. The object therefore belongs to a small plan for handling scrutiny: the batteries are separated from their container and made available as an explanation for the alarm.

Narrative Function

The sock is not presented as a keepsake or as an object with an established history. Its force in the scene is procedural. A concealed bundle becomes a set of items Billy Poe can display, and Dwayne’s brief directions turn an otherwise obscure find into a means of navigating the detector. The episode makes the prison’s passage through screening depend not only on the machine, but also on how Billy Poe is prepared to account for what it detects.
