German occupation and rule of Alsace
An Officer and a SpyThe German occupation and rule of Alsace is a personal and political pressure in the account of the Dreyfus case: it gives Georges Picquart a direct grievance against Germany while complicating his judgment of Alfred Dreyfus, whose family remained in the occupied region. At trial, Dreyfus’s identification with Alsace also becomes part of his public denial of treason.
A Personal Loss for Picquart
When Picquart argues for an intelligence operation against Germany, he rejects the suggestion that his case is simply hatred. His explanation is that the Germans occupy his family’s home. The occupation thus enters the discussion not as an abstract strategic issue but as a loss connected to his own family, informing the force with which he presents the proposed operation to Charles-Arthur Gonse.
Dreyfus and the Occupied Region
The same political circumstance shapes Picquart’s view of Dreyfus. Picquart recalls that Dreyfus’s family had chosen to remain in occupied Alsace and that Dreyfus’s money came from Germany. These facts deepen Picquart’s existing dislike of him; he interprets Dreyfus’s wealth through the occupation and regards it as compromised. In retrospect, however, Picquart recognizes that Dreyfus’s refusal to behave like a grateful outsider was nearly heroic, even if it was imprudent in the prevailing climate. The episode shows how occupation could turn a person’s family ties and apparent prosperity into grounds for suspicion.
Alsace as an Affiliation and an Accusation
At the close of Dreyfus’s trial, he declares himself a Frenchman and a man of Alsace, and denies being a traitor. His appeal makes the occupied region central to the meaning of his defense: Alsace is not evidence of divided allegiance in his statement, but part of the identity through which he asserts his loyalty. Set beside Picquart’s earlier suspicions, the moment exposes the gap between Dreyfus’s own declaration and the hostile meanings others attach to his family’s continued presence in occupied Alsace.
