The Summer of 1992

Restless Beginnings
A boy out of place
Anthony is fourteen, dissatisfied with his body, family, and small town. His days are shaped by boredom and a growing conviction that he must escape.
A first encounter
He and his cousin steal a canoe and reach Bare-Ass Beach, where Anthony meets Stéphanie. The brief encounter gives his summer an emotional center.
The Missing Motorcycle

Consequences Arrive
A reckless night
Anthony takes his father’s Yamaha YZ without permission and rides it to a party. At dawn, the motorcycle has vanished, turning youthful bravado into a family crisis.
Fear becomes action
His mother searches for a solution while Anthony dreads telling his father. Their anxious efforts pull him deeper into danger rather than freeing him from responsibility.
The Gunpoint Standoff

A Borrowed Weapon
Seeking an answer
Anthony and his cousin visit Manu, hoping he can recover the missing motorcycle. Instead, Manu gives them cocaine and shows them a loaded MAC 50.
A threat without resolution
Anthony later confronts Hacine at the ZUP with the pistol, but the scooter stalls and he cannot shoot. He spits at Hacine and escapes, leaving a feud neither boy knows how to end.
The 1996 Departure

Leaving on a Deadline
An exit route
At eighteen, Anthony has passed a technological baccalauréat and enlisted in the army. He sees military service as a way out of Heillange and a chance to become someone different.
A final evening
On Bastille Day he hopes for one more meeting with Stéphanie. Their intimacy is interrupted by an attack on the car, and the night ends with exhaustion rather than triumph.
The Return to Heillange

A Failed Escape
The army ends early
A knee injury ends Anthony’s service before it can become the clean break he imagined. He returns to Heillange and moves through temporary jobs before finding work at Gordon.
Familiar roads remain
He acquires an apartment and a car, yet repeatedly drives toward Stéphanie’s neighborhood. The routine shows that physical departure has not freed him from the town or his memories.
