Heillange Skate Park

And Their Children After Them

Heillange Skate Park is a small public skate spot on the road out of town, built recently enough to be described as new. More than a place to skate, it becomes a regular destination for Heillange’s teenagers and a meeting point for a varied local crowd.

Setting and Facilities

The park stands near the fire department barracks, beyond the town’s built-up center. Its equipment is spare: one ramp, three flat rails, and two low walls. The simple layout gives the site a practical, unassuming character; its importance comes less from its facilities than from the people who gather there.

Crowd and Everyday Life

The park attracts a disparate mix, from rich kids to notorious punks. They spend time skating, but even more time drinking; hash and attractive girls are also part of the scene described around the park. It is a place where recreation and hanging around blur together, with the range of visitors bringing different social groups into the same space.

Simon Rotier is one of its most notable skaters. His manner on the board is phlegmatic, but he performs the best ollies in town and largely neglects other tricks. His worn Vans, jeans that reveal his underwear, and daily change of T-shirt give him a recognizable presence among the park’s regulars. Stéphanie Chaussoy and Clémence also go there repeatedly: when Clémence remarks that they have already visited four times that week, the frequency marks the park as part of their ordinary routine rather than a special outing.

Encounters and Narrative Role

On one visit, Stéphanie and Clémence find Simon sitting in the shade of the ramp with his brother Romain Rotier, a longhaired friend, and a girl unfamiliar to them. The shaded ramp serves as a place to sit and observe as well as to skate, making the park a social setting where arrivals and unfamiliar faces prompt curiosity.

The park also draws characters into conflict before they reach it. Anthony Casati spots Stéphanie on the path leading to the new skate park, with Romain following her on a small Chappy. When Romain repeatedly blocks her way and honks, Anthony runs toward them. The confrontation occurs on the approach, not at the park itself, but the destination frames the encounter: the skate park is woven into the routes and routines through which Heillange’s young people meet, pursue one another, and clash.
