ZUP
And Their Children After ThemZUP is Heillange’s housing district of towers and courtyards, set above the town on a steep slope. Its paths, public spaces, and roads connect everyday life in the estate to downtown and the wider valley, while the return of familiar characters shows how the same landscape can feel both like home and like a place altered by absence.
Setting and Connections
The district occupies high ground above downtown: a steep ascent taxes Anthony’s scooter, while a road down the hill leads toward a roundabout where routes divide between the Grappe Housing Development, town, and the highway. The estate is not sealed off from the outside world. After visiting Malek Bouali, Anthony and Hélène cross parking lots, flower beds, grassy mounds, and graffiti-marked benches as mopeds circle nearby. From the district, the valley viaduct is visible, carrying cars traveling to or from Paris at speed. The scene places ZUP within a wider geography of movement even as its residents watch from their windows.
Courtyards and Everyday Life
One courtyard is remembered through its painted carousel and heat-struck trees. When Anthony arrives there on his scooter, a group of young men lounge beneath a shelter; Eliott and the others have been smoking hash since morning after a prolonged shortage. The courtyard’s calm, ordinary gathering contrasts with Anthony’s earlier rush through the streets. His scooter slows on the steep climb, and after circling near the towers he approaches the group at a reduced pace, the break in his momentum carrying him from solitary movement into a shared social space.
Return and Recognition
On returning to Heillange after weeks away in Morocco, Hacine drives below the towers and recognizes the courtyard, its dust, and its shady places, but finds the bumper-car carousel gone and no familiar faces. The district remains home, yet recognition is incomplete: small absences interrupt the impression that everything is as before. Hacine delays going to his father’s house and avoids seeking out Eliott and the others, wary of returning amid rumors and questions. His circuit through ZUP makes the estate a threshold between his absence and his return, a familiar place whose changed details reflect how distance has unsettled belonging.
